Together with Pediatric Epilepsy, the University of Pittsburgh Comprehensive Epilepsy Center (UPCEC) is accredited by the National Association of Epilepsy Centers (NAEC) as a level 4 epilepsy center. The UPCEC provides state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment services to adults and children with seizures. The center is a joint program combining the resources of the University of Pittsburgh, UPMC, and Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh (CHP). Established in 1986, it provides regional referral and consultative services to Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, and beyond. The staff specializes in the evaluation and treatment of patients with forms of seizure disorders that are difficult to diagnose or manage. Clinical services span outpatient clinics, EEG and continuous video-EEG monitoring across the UPMC network, and subspecialty clinics in functional seizures, RNS, women’s epilepsy, and multi-disciplinary clinic with neurosurgery for epilepsy surgery candidates. A new 10-bed, self-contained adult EMU is slated to open next year. Patients are also evaluated in the UPMC MEG Center, and with PET and ictal SPECT. In addition, research conducted at the Epilepsy Center has contributed to the introduction of multiple new antiepileptic drugs over the past decades, innovative approaches to presurgical evaluations and improving surgical outcomes for patients with drug-resistant epilepsy, signal processing of intracranial EEG activity, and advancing the treatment of women with epilepsy during reproductive years.
