Summary
About the Position: This position is located at Naval Medical Center in Portsmouth, Virginia.
This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.
Cut-Off: Applications will be reviewed and referred for selection at periodic cut-off dates, specifically the 1st each of month.

Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
This position has mandatory seasonal Influenza vaccination requirements and is subject to annual seasonal Influenza vaccinations unless otherwise exempted for medical or religious reasons (documentation of exemption must be provided upon hire).
Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
This position requires the incumbent to have Tuberculosis testing.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. GS-04 Grade-Level:
General Experience: One year of general experience. General experience is progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work that indicates ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position to be filled, such as: 1) Working knowledge of anatomy and physiology, major disease process, diagnoses, surgical procedures, tests, and pharmacology; AND 2) Assigning International Classification of Diseases, Clinical Modification (ICD-CM), Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) to diagnosis, procedures, and services; work may be reviewed.
OR
Education: Two years of education above the high school level obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university.
GS-5 Grade-Level:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) Working knowledge of anatomy and physiology, major disease process, diagnoses, surgical procedures, tests, and pharmacology; 2) Assigning International Classification of Diseases, Clinical Modification (ICD-CM) to diagnosis, and Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) to each procedure performed in an inpatient or/and outpatient clinic setting; AND 3) Reviewing medical records for completeness.
This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).
OR
Education: Four years of education above the high school level obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university.
GS-6 Grade-Level:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) Working knowledge of anatomy and physiology, major disease process, diagnoses, surgical procedures, tests, and pharmacology; 2) Coding of medical records using International Classification of Diseases, Clinical Modification (ICD-CM), Current Procedural Terminology (CPT), the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS); AND 3) Auditing medical records to assure they contain appropriate documentation to support the principal diagnosis, principal procedures, qualifying complications and co-morbid conditions used for the coding assignment.
This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).
Education
FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university. Additional information
Male applicants born after December 31, 1959 must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration.
You will be required to provide proof of U.S. Citizenship.
One year trial/probationary period may be required.
Direct Deposit of Pay is required.

This recruitment provides promotion opportunity to the target grade of the position without further competition when selectee is eligible and recommended by management.
