The Synthetic Molecule Design and Development (SMDD) organization has a great opportunity for an innovative peptide chemist to join our process development organization. In addition to the recent launch of synthetic peptide Tirzepatide, SMDD has several exciting peptide projects in our portfolio. You will be part of a diverse team of, chemical engineers, synthetic and analytical chemists delivering product and process understanding across a broad range of platforms. Top candidates for this position will be able to:

• Enable the design, development, and implementation of sustainable Innovative processes for the synthesis of complex peptides.
• Embrace green chemistry and engineering as a means of effecting a paradigm shift to reduce the environmental footprint in peptide science: https://pubs.acs.org/doi/full/10.1021/acs.joc.8b03001
• Show proficiency in multiple modes of peptide synthesis including Solid phase peptide synthesis, liquid phase peptide synthesis, semi-synthesis and enzymatic approaches: https://pubs.acs.org/doi/abs/10.1021/acs.oprd.1c00108
• Familiarity with chromatography, mass spectrometry, optical spectroscopy, and peptide automation.
• Oversight of development and multi- kg scale-up of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient campaigns at contract manufacturing organizations for peptide products of similar complexity to Tirzepatide.
• Present research findings at conferences and publish in high quality peer-reviewed journals.

The ideal candidate will have breadth in multiple peptide synthesis strategies. Must be computer savvy and have strong technical problem-solving ability, and have an internal motivation to work independently and achieve efficient, quality results in a fast-paced environment.

Position Responsibilities:

• Engage with scientists across Eli Lilly's Development and Manufacturing organizations to develop a deep understanding of new initiatives and improve existing scientific processes.
• Identify ground-breaking peptide technologies as well as trends in sustainable synthetic peptide chemistry, chemical engineering, and continuous manufacturing.
• Identify and exploit new scientific concepts, strong problem-solving skills, and be self-motivated to contribute across multiple projects.
• Strong written and verbal communication to speak to both technical and business-related implications of your work.

Basic Qualifications:

• PhD in Chemistry or related field.

Additional Skills/Preferences:

• Fluent in English
• Familiarity with small molecules and oligonucleotide synthetic methods
• Reversed phase chromatography, ion exchange chromatography, size exclusion chromatography, chiral chromatography.
• Hands-on experience with high-resolution mass spectrometry in the characterization of synthetic peptides and experience with MS data Interpretation.
• Ability to learn and apply technical knowledge to meet changing project needs.
• Flexibility and ability to prioritize work to meet interpersonal and scientific goals.
• Ability to balance multiple activities, prioritize and handle ambiguity
