Position Overview:

Under supervision, maintains anesthesia machinery, equipment, and supplies essential for anesthesia delivery. Assists Anesthesiologists with technical setup before anesthesia induction and performs related duties.

Ideal Candidate Profile:

Excels in routine maintenance and troubleshooting of specialized anesthesia equipment, ensuring optimal function and patient safety. Quickly identifies and resolves malfunctions, following manufacturer guidelines and safety protocols. Possesses strong knowledge of equipment operation and procedural protocols.

Demonstrates expertise in reviewing surgery schedules to ensure equipment readiness, assisting with surgical case preparation, and preparing operating rooms. Responsibilities include cleaning and restocking anesthesia carts, turning over ORs, disinfecting equipment per policy, and setting up for subsequent cases. Will also assist with staffing challenges during leaves, increased patient volume, and resignations to maintain smooth operations.

Distinguishing Characteristics:

This role specializes in preparation, use, and maintenance of anesthesia supplies and equipment. Unlike Operating Room Technicians, who assist surgeons with instruments and surgical aseptic techniques, this class focuses on anesthesia support.

Department/Agency:

Health Care Agency – Ventura County Medical Center (VCMC) and Santa Paula Hospital.

Union Representation:

Services Employees International Union (SEIU); eligible for overtime compensation.

Employment Type:

Intermittent position—employed on a temporary, day-to-day basis. The eligible list from this recruitment will fill Regular (Temporary, Fixed-term), Intermittent, and Extra-help vacancies. One intermittent vacancy currently exists at VCMC.

Examples of Duties:

  • Ensure proper setup and calibration of anesthesia equipment for surgery cases.
  • Review surgery schedules ahead to confirm equipment availability.
  • Participate in on-call rotation for after-hours and weekend emergencies.
  • Troubleshoot and repair anesthesia machinery.
  • Transport equipment between perioperative areas.
  • Clean and restock anesthesia carts and equipment.
  • Support timely OR turnover by prepping anesthesia equipment for subsequent cases.
  • Identify and remove malfunctioning equipment.
  • Disinfect equipment according to policy.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Typical Qualifications:

Education & Experience:

Any combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates required knowledge and abilities.

Minimum: High school diploma, GED, or California High School Proficiency Certificate AND completion of an Anesthesia Technician training program.

Substitution: One year full-time equivalent experience in anesthesia services may substitute for training program completion.

Special Requirements:

Valid Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) certificate before employment start and maintained throughout employment.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Anesthesia machinery, equipment, and supplies.
  • Sterile techniques, aseptic principles, biologic hazards, and standard precautions.

Ability to:

  • Maintain and organize anesthesia environment and supplies to support department functions.
  • Provide perioperative technical support ensuring safe patient care.
  • Communicate effectively with medical staff and others.
  • Deliver excellent customer service to internal and external customers.
  • Work cooperatively with colleagues.

Supplemental Information:

Role requires frequent standing, bending, reaching, squatting, kneeling, and ability to move and lift patients/equipment to perform duties.
