Applications Analyst

Southern Company is seeking a professional Applications Analyst to join our Technology Organization's Finance and Tax Center of Excellence team. This position can be based in Atlanta or Birmingham with a hybrid work schedule (mixture of onsite and remote work) as an option (remote work policies subject to change). The successful candidate for this position will have the responsibility to provide technical support for web-based and client-server financial and accounting solutions, with a major focus on the client-server PowerPlan Fixed Asset Accounting and Management System. The analyst will be required to develop an in-depth understanding of the PowerPlan application software and to collaborate with our business partners and other towers of technology. This position leverages strong partnerships with the business, other software Centers of Excellence, project managers, vendors, and other technical and consulting resources across the Technology Organization.

Additional responsibilities:

  • Ongoing troubleshooting, consulting, and general support of software solutions
  • Full lifecycle software management support during the evolution of existing systems. This will include coding, testing, deploying, upgrading, and providing proper documentation
  • Follow all Southern Company standard change management procedures
  • Assume the role of a subject matter expert for the supported software
  • Engage with other software analysts to ensure alignment with other applications, integration, and environment standards
  • Serve in rotational on-call support
  • Assess and remediate application issues resulting from changes and upgrades in the environment
  • Collaborate with vendors for software issue resolution and adherence to best practices
  • Collaborate with internal technology and business stakeholders on efforts related to end-of-life technology upgrades and migrations to new platforms
  • Coordinate and communicate activities to implement modifications
  • Provide application and infrastructure test support
The position requires excellent technical and communications skills necessary to achieve high quality support in day-to-day operations. The individual must exhibit initiative and independence. Strong analytical skills are required.

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor or Master's degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems, Engineering or related field, or equivalent experience required
  • 2 years of experience in software support
  • 2 years of experience in software development
  • 2 years of experience with vendor solution support
  • Experience using Oracle or other relational databases with complex SQL and PL/SQL
  • Experience with Agility, Remedy, JIRA, TOAD, is a plus
  • Experience with PowerBuilder 12.5 or above is a plus
  • Functional knowledge of PowerPlan software is a plus
  • Technical support experience with PowerPlan Fixed Asset Accounting and Management System a plus
  • Experience with C# or other object-oriented programming language is a plus
  • Experience with web-based application development and support is a plus
  • Experience with cloud-based applications support is a plus
  • Experience working in a fast-paced, competitive information technology organization.
  • Experience in the utility industry is a plus.
