Assess the health status and initiate appropriate interventions for patients located in the Surgical and Neurosciences Intensive Care Unit (SNICU)
Position Responsibilities
- Assess the health status of patients through history taking and physical examination
- Order and interpret appropriate medical tests and laboratory values to assist in making a diagnosis
- Prescribe drugs and medical devices used for patient intervention
- Perform and document procedures
- Document patient encounters, assessments, diagnoses and plans of care in the medical record
- Initiate and assess the effectiveness of therapy for critical illness
- Collaborate with other health care providers to provide and coordinate care given in the SNICU
- Assist in the education of residents and medical students rotating through the SNICU
- Institute quality initiatives to improve the care of critical patients
- Provide information and counseling to patients and families
- Assess and order therapies as appropriate for undergoing treatment in the Hyperbaric Oxygen Facility
- Monitor and intervene as indicated in patients undergoing treatment in the Hyperbaric Oxygen Facility
- This position does include the responsibility to take call
- Other duties as assigned
Education Requirements
- Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner (ARNP)- A Master’s degree is required, the preferred degree in Nursing. If a Master’s degree is in a related field, a Baccalaureate degree in Nursing is required.
- ARNP’s are required to hold current certification in specialty area and licensure as ARNP in state of Iowa
- ARNP’s are required to hold current license to practice nursing in the state of Iowa
- PA’s are required to comply with registration and licensure requirements as specified by the Iowa Board of Physician Assistant Examiners and/or hold current certification by the NCCPA
- Demonstrated experience working effectively in a diverse environment
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required
- Prior training or specific experience in critical care with an emphasis on surgical patients/diseases is desired
- Three years of demonstrated experience in area of critical care practice is preferred
