Job Description
OVERVIEW
The Associate Reporter works with the CNBC.com APAC editorial team to produce stories using a content management system, pitch story ideas, and report and write original news stories for a fast-paced, business and financial news website.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Work closely with a dynamic team of financial reporters and editors, prioritizing tasks such as writing business, economic or policy stories, covering breaking news, conducting interviews for stories and videos, and researching story ideas
- Write fast and accurate breaking news copy and original stories based on business trends, geopolitical developments and televised interviews
- Pitch, report, and write news and analysis stories with a focus on business, markets, or economics
- Develop sources in government and business to gather information and insights
- Closely monitor trends and events in global politics, trade, technology, and business
- Research financial markets and economics data for appropriate stories and content on CNBC.com
- Use the site's content management system, make use of charts, graphics, video embeds, and appropriate links on CNBC.com, to ensure stories are compelling to CNBC.com readers
- Work closely with CNBC.com and the TV production teams to make sure the most relevant and compelling content is produced for CNBC.com
- Pitch original news and analysis pieces on markets, investing, wealth, and finance
Qualifications
ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Prior experience with digital media and content management systems
- Proven track record in covering economic, business and financial news in China, Australia, Japan, Hong Kong or South Korea, as well as Southeast Asia
- Skilled in writing straight news stories, as well as long-form features or explainers
- Passion for storytelling with a strong news sense and in-depth knowledge of financial markets, business, geopolitical, and economic news
- Collaborative team player with excellent communication and organizational skills
- Proactive individual who works efficiently under tight deadlines while multitasking
- Ability to process and draw conclusions from quantitative information such as quarterly earnings, trade data, GDP figures, and other numeric-based data
- Independent worker who takes the initiative to pitch story ideas and responds promptly to team requests to jump on stories as they break and develop
- Willing to learn and work in a fast-paced and demanding live news environment
- Demonstrated writing experience with a leading wire service, news publication, business news website, or news organization
- Fluency in English language
- Flexible and willing to occasionally work different shifts when required
DESIRED ATTRIBUTES
- Minimum 2 years of experience working in a similar role
- Keen interest in business news for print and digital writing
- Familiarity with social media and comfortable with various content management systems
- Passionate about exploring other writing formats, including chart-driven stories and deep-dive, in-depth pieces, using graphics and data visualizations
