Summary
VA Loma Linda Health Care System (VALLHCS) is currently looking for two Audiologist positions that are located in the Audiology and Speech Pathology Service, one full-time position at the Palm Desert Community Based Outpatient Clinic and one full-time position at the Victorville Community Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC). The incumbent carries out his/her duties and responsibilities throughout the medical center, including all clinical and patient care areas involved with the service.

Qualifications
BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
- Citizenship. Citizen of the United States.
- English Language Proficiency. Audiologists must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 2, section D, paragraph 5a.
- Licensure. Individuals must hold a full, current and unrestricted license to practice audiology at the doctoral level in a United States state, territory, commonwealth or the District of Columbia. (1) Non-licensed audiologists who otherwise meet the eligibility requirements for licensure may be given a temporary appointment as a graduate audiologist at the GS-11 grade under the authority of 38 U.S.C. ยง 7405(c)(2) for a period not to exceed two years from the date of employment on the condition that these audiologists provide care only under the supervision of fully licensed audiologists. Individuals appointed as graduate audiologists may not be promoted to the GS-12 level without being fully licensed. (2) The Under Secretary of Health, or designee, in VHA Central Office may waive the requirement for licensure under the authority of 38 U.S.C. ยง 7405 of a candidate who will be assigned to a research, academic or administrative position with no patient care responsibilities. In such instances, HR office staff can only appoint these candidates in exceptional circumstances where their credentials demonstrate high professional attainment or expertise in the specialty area. (3) All audiologists who perform compensation and pension examinations perform direct patient care duties and must possess a full, current and unrestricted license to practice audiology and must meet the experience requirements under Section 2. D. See 38 C.F.R. ยง 4.85.
Grandfathering Provision: May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).
- NOTE: [Effective] January 1, 2007, the Council on Academic Accreditation (CAA) in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology of ASHA [accredits] only doctoral degree programs in audiology or hearing science.
Audiologist GS-11
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs): Completion of 1 year of professional experience as an audiologist equivalent to the next lower level; or 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a doctoral degree; or doctoral degree in audiology, hearing science, or a directly related field. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the [knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs) identified for the assignment.]
- Knowledge of contemporary audiology practice;
- Ability to communicate orally and in writing.
- Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, acoustics, applied acoustics, communication, psychoacoustics, and auditory/vestibular pathophysiology;
- Knowledge of principles and techniques in the assessment and treatment of auditory and balance disorders;
- Ability to perform functions associated with contemporary audiology scope of practice; and
- Ability to interact with patients, families, and other health care professionals.
Audiologist GS-12
Experience. In addition to the requirements at the GS-11 level, completion of one year of professional experience comparable to the next lower grade level.
Staff audiologists at this grade level must demonstrate professional knowledge of, and skill in applying, a wide range of theories, principles, and methodologies of the practice of audiology to a wide range of populations. Individuals may perform ancillary assignments, including program management duties on an occasional basis, where the complexity and amount of work is not substantial [(less that 25% of the time). The following KSAs are required:
- Ability to develop coherent treatment strategies;
- Knowledge of clinical services, and the ability to perform them independently;
- Ability to conduct assessments and provide treatment interventions;
- Ability to provide consultation to other health care professionals;
- Knowledge of contemporary audiology practice; and
- Ability to perform functions associated with contemporary audiology scope of practice.

Physical Requirements: This work is primarily sedentary but also requires some standing, walking, bending, lifting and carrying of items. Physical effort and ability to perform repetitive motions with arms and requires good balance to prevent falling when assisting patients with an activity. See VA Directive and Handbook 5019.

Additional information
Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. VA may offer newly-appointed Federal employee's credit for their job-related non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
