Paygrade: Facilities 05 Days: 261 Primary Purpose: Perform a variety of carpentry work and cabinet shop fabrication to provide and maintain a safe and attractive educational and work environment. Qualifications: Education/Certification High School Diploma or GED, preferred Carpentry certification, trade school training, or apprentice background, preferred Valid Class C Texas driver’s license and proof of insurability with District insurance carrier Special Knowledge/Skills Knowledge and skill of carpentry in accordance with industry standards Knowledge of equipment, materials, methods, practices, and tools used in carpentry Ability to use hand and power tools and demonstrate proper carpentry techniques and methods Ability to determine sound woods and assorted surfaces in products used in carpentry Ability to read and interpret blueprints and diagrams Ability to measure and perform mathematical calculations Strong organizational, communication (verbal and written), and interpersonal skills Basic computer skills Ability to utilize technology resources relevant to position Experience Three years documented carpentry experience, required. Major Responsibilities and Duties: Maintenance and Repair Perform carpentry work and cabinet shop fabrication as assigned. Determine best approach to solving tasks after carefully observing and walking work site to ensure safety for site occupants and/or facility users while project is underway. Outline projects and work with minimal oversight. Review and inspect assigned tasks to adequately order required materials and supplies for the job. Read and interpret blueprints, plans, and schematic drawings connected to tasks. Determine the soundness of wood and assorted surfaces in products. Make minimal repairs and patches to areas connected but not limited to roofs, gutters, drains, and downspouts. Records and Reports Record all materials and supplies used and man hours accumulated on projects until scope of work is accomplished, and keep foreman informed on total job costs. Other Provide ongoing guidance and on the job training for carpenter helpers. Exhibit behavior that is professional, ethical, and responsible; and serve as role model for staff and public. Perform other duties as assigned. Safety Practice a high standard of safety in the performance of all duties and ensure staff abides by District policies and procedures. Contribute to the prevention of accidents and injuries by observing safety rules and District policy, practicing the principles and skills taught in safety training, wearing personal protective equipment as required, reporting injuries and incidences immediately to supervisor, and being proactive in the ongoing efforts to improve and maintain workplace safety. Supervisory Responsibilities: None Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors: Tools/Equipment Used: Standard carpentry equipment including small hand tools, power tools, and measuring instruments; light truck or van Posture: Frequent standing, kneeling, squatting, bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, and twisting Motion: Frequent walking, climbing stairs/ladders/scaffolding, grasping/squeezing, wrist flexion/extension, and overhead reaching; visual acuity; frequent driving Lifting: Lifting and carrying up to 55 pounds without assistance, more than 55 pounds with appropriate assistance, on a daily basis Environment: Work outside and inside, on slippery or uneven walking surfaces, and on ladders or scaffolding; frequent exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures, humidity, dust, toxic chemicals and materials, asbestos-containing materials, grease, oils, loud noises, vibration, and electrical hazards; work around machinery with moving parts; may work alone; occasionally work irregular or prolonged hours; frequent District wide travel Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress and exercise reasoning and problem-solving under pressure This document describes the general purpose and responsibilities assigned to this job and is not an exhaustive list of all responsibilities and duties that may be assigned or skills that may be required.
