MITRE's Homeland Security Center (HSLC) is seeking a driven and technical networking and communications engineer with research experience in cellular technologies. We are seeking someone who can successfully support work with our DHS sponsors to identify the challenges and opportunities 5G and beyond technologies pose to the Homeland Security Enterprise, including LEO and public safety/emergency communications, and to the nation's critical communications infrastructure. In this role, the candidate will support DHS in developing secure and resilient solutions to those challenges and opportunities.

Job Responsibilities:

You are passionate about keeping up with emerging cellular technologies through continued learning, active engagements with academia and industry, and have a desire to remain hands-on performing research, design, development, prototyping, and testing. You understand communications networks and desire to work with emerging technologies that will be enabled by a 5G / beyond 5G platform such as Internet of Things, AI/ML, augmented/virtual/mixed reality, and edge computing along with the security and supply chain concerns associated with the technologies. You exemplify a research-oriented mindset and enjoy experimenting with and augmenting existing commercial technologies to provide tailored solutions. You have the technical skills necessary to understand and translate customer challenges into actionable, impactful solutions in support of our customer's most critical missions.

Key Functions:

  • Perform systems engineering, design, analysis, and experimentation to advance the security and reliability of 5G ecosystems for our government sponsors. Examples of activities might include:
    • Assist MITRE lead engineers in prototyping networking architectures and control algorithms to meet low latency, high availability, and high Quality of Experience requirements
    • Develop and implement proof-of-concept microservices-based applications for real-time and near real-time use cases at the cellular edge
    • Assist in designing architectures that use software-defined networking, AI/ML and virtualization to address customer challenges
    • Develop knowledge products to educate and inform government customers about 5G and beyond technologies, risks, and impacts to their missions
    • Experiment with management and automation of virtualized resources at scale
  • Engage with customers to analyze operational requirements and apply sound technology solutions
  • Develop technical research ideas and craft proposals for research initiatives
  • Assist with lab prototyping, field testing, technical benchmarking, and modeling and simulation
  • Actively collaborate across MITRE and participate in technical exchange engagements to share knowledge and research
  • Stay abreast of new technology and technical areas relevant to cellular systems and applications and services that 5G/6G platforms will enable such as IoT, UAV, autonomous vehicles, augmented and extended reality

Required Qualifications:

We are interested in highly motivated and enthusiastic candidates with technical experience and education to assist with challenging technical problems. Qualifications include:

  • BS degree in Electrical Engineering, Communications Engineering, Computer Science, or related field and 3 years of relevant experience.
  • Applicants selected for this position will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or applicants who are eligible for security clearances.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and present architectures, algorithms, and security concepts
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and collaborate across multi-disciplinary teams to achieve results
  • Working knowledge and experience in any of the following areas:
    • Wireless technologies, cellular systems, 5G architectures, and/or network slicing
    • Cloud networking and virtualization technologies used in 5G deployments
    • Software-defined networking and network functional virtualization as applied to 5G architectures
    • Virtualization and orchestration techniques and technologies
    • O-RAN architecture and open interfaces
    • Multi-access edge computing (MEC) architectures
    • 5G, cloud, and zero-trust security vulnerabilities and architectures
  • Ability to translate technical concepts and usage scenarios to government applications and missions.
  • Systems engineering experience, analytic/analysis expertise, technical writing and communication skills, ability to visualize and present complex concepts to technical and non-technical audiences.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • MS in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related field.
  • Willingness/passion to learn new technologies and applications beyond the task at hand.
  • Education and experience in one or more of the following areas:
    • 5G interfaces, protocols, and procedures
    • 5G security architectures and techniques to enforce security for non-3GPP access and identify additional protections needed for 3GPP and non-3GPP access to meet government
    • 5G network slicing
    • 5G and beyond standards and specifications such as 3GPP specifications, ITU requirements, ETSI specifications such as Management and Network Orchestration and MEC , O-RAN Alliance specifications, IEEE standards, new IP for beyond 5G
    • Zero-trust security solutions applied to 5G networks
    • Application of AI/ML for wireless network management, optimization, digital signal processing, anomaly detection
    • Terrestrial and non-terrestrial systems to meet customer needs for coverage and capacity
    • Developing microservices-based application on cloud-based container platforms
    • Experience working with homeland security stakeholders or missions at the federal, state, or local levels.
    • Exposure to or experience with LEO communications technologies and emergency communications.
