Posting Details Position Information Position Title Data Analyst Department Astrophysics - 003 Position Summary The American Museum of Natural History is one of the world’s preeminent scientific and cultural institutions, and has as its mission to discover, interpret and disseminate information about human cultures, the natural world and the universe through a wide-ranging program of scientific research, education and exhibition. The Astrophysics department is seeking a full-time Data Analyst to support scientific research programs involving both spectroscopic and imaging data, working closely with the Astrophysics team. Job duties include, but are not limited to: • Process and analyze observational datasets from ground- and space-based telescopes. This includes the reduction of raw datasets, development of automated pipelines, calibration of data and generation of science-ready data products. • Provide written descriptions of the above-listed science tasks to support papers submitted to science journals. • Support efforts to export processed datasets to colleagues worldwide. The expected salary for the Data Analyst is $45,000/annual. This position is overtime-eligible and the AMNH offers an extensive benefits package designed to meet the needs of our dedicated and diverse community. Pay is determined based on several factors. The hiring range for the position at commencement is based on the type of work and the scope of responsibilities. The salary and placement offered is based on a number of individualized factors, including, but not limited to, skills, knowledge, training, education, credentials, areas of specialization and depth and scope of experience. Minimum Qualifications • Bachelor’s degree in astronomy, physics or another closely related field. • Demonstrated experience in reducing both spectroscopic and imaging astronomical data. • Strong communication and collaboration skills. • Proficiency with Python programming and familiarity in scientific libraries such as Astropy, NumPy, SciPy and Matplotlib. • Experience with astronomical data formats (FITS), coordinate systems and World Coordinate System (WCS) standards. • Familiarity with standard tools for data reduction such as IRAF, PyRAF, Pypelt, CCDPROC, DRAGONS or similar. • Experience working with archival data from facilities such as HST, JWST, Gemini, VLT, Keck or other large telescopes. Preferred Qualifications Physical Demands • Must be able to remain in a stationary position (sitting or standing) for prolonged periods. • Must be able to move about the Museum campus.
