Qualifications

To be considered for the position, you must meet the following qualification requirements:

NOTE: Public Law 97-35 requires that persons who administer radiologic procedures meet the credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 75. Essentially, they must (1) have successfully completed an educational program that meets or exceeds the standards described in that regulation, and is accredited by an organization recognized by the Department of Education, and (2) be certified as radiographers in their field.

The following meet these requirements:

(1) Persons employed by the Federal Government as radiologic personnel prior to the effective date of the regulation (January 13, 1986) who shoe evidence of current or fully satisfactory performance or certification of such from a licensed practitioner, such as a doctor of medicine, osteopathy, dentistry, podiatry, or chiropractic who prescribes radiologic procedures to others.

(2) Persons first employed by the Federal Government as radiologic personnel after the effective date of the regulation who (a) received training from institutions in a State or foreign jurisdiction that did not accredit training in that particular field at the time of graduation, or (b) practiced in a State or foreign jurisdiction that did not license that particular field or did not allow special eligibility to take a licensure examination for those who did not graduate from an accredited educational program, provided that such persons show evidence of training, experience, and competence as determined by OPM or the employing agency.

AND

Education:

GL-05: Successful completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months’ duration in a post-high school radiography program.

NOTE: Successful completion of a course for medical radiologic technicians in the Armed Forces is qualifying on a month-for-month basis up to the 1 year of specialized experience required for GL-05.

GL-06: Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience required above GS-05 ONLY in those instances where it is directly related to work of the position.

OR

Experience:

GL-05 and GL-06: You must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade, and must include experience in the operation of diagnostic radiology equipment under the direction of radiologists or other medical officers to produce radiographic studies used in medical diagnosis and treatment.

Some examples of this qualifying experience are:

GL-05:

  • Experience in assisting with performing routine diagnostic radiographic procedures and examinations.
  • Experience in assisting with positioning patients for procedures.
  • Experience in assisting with taking fluoroscopic and film exposures in procedures such as gastrointestinal series, barium enema examinations, cholangiograms and pyelograms.

GL-06:

  • Experience in assisting with radiography which includes, but not limited to: chest x-rays, colons, UGI’s, EXU’s, tomography, arthrograms, myelograms, ultrasound, and other contrast studies.
  • Experience in performing darkroom duties to include film development and operating automatic film processing machines.
  • Experience with independently positioning patients for X-rays and explaining method of procedures.

OR

Combination of Education and Experience:

GL-05 and GL-06: Have a combination of education and experience. This experience must have equipped you with the qualifications to perform the major duties of this position as described above.

If applicable, credit will be given for paid and unpaid experience. To receive proper credit, you must show the actual time (such as the number of hours worked per week) spent in activities.
