A Brief Overview
The Director of Social Work provides leadership and management of clinical care coordination, psychosocial assessment, and support functions. The Director has responsibility for the systems, processes, and outcomes of clinical care teams and programs designed to address the clinical, psychosocial, and financial needs of patients and families. The Director not only represents areas under his/her direct responsibility but provides leadership around organization-wide issues such as improved patient care, clinical effectiveness, cost reduction, patient and staff satisfaction, and patient throughput and flow.

What you will do
  • Directs the fiscal, strategic, and clinical operations of the Department of Social Work.
  • Directs and manages Senior Clinical Social Workers, Clinical Social Workers, Medical Social Workers, Social Work Interns, and Students.
  • Conduct periodic quality assurance meetings to establish, document, and review quality improvement trends and to implement plans for improvement.
  • Support education team with in-service training activities to increase professional knowledge and skills of staff.
  • Develops and maintains relationships with post-acute care providers, vendors, community agencies, health plans, etc. that support appropriate and necessary care coordination for SHC patients.
  • Oversees the functions and finances of patient assistance funding, discharge decider implementation, and SHC Housing Assistance Program.
  • Develops and implements policies and procedures that guide and support the provision of services; ensures that policies and procedures are compatible with the function and goals of SHC and which meet the external regulatory requirements.
  • Integrates department's services with the hospital's primary functions by supporting organizational mission, priorities, and goals, and by delivering optimal quality health care services.
  • Collaborates with other SHC and SOM leadership to lead and manage interdepartmental interactions as well as performance improvement to support the annual strategic goals of SHC.
  • Provides leadership for and participates in Stanford Hospitals and Clinics program planning, task forces, projects, and committees. Provides expertise and direction for complex problem-solving.
  • Responsible for all aspects of operations for the department, including forecasting, projecting, and monitoring the operating and capital budgets and negotiating departmental recoveries.
  • Provides leadership of and active participation in short- and long-term improvement initiatives as requested by the SHC organization.

Education Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Social Work (MSW) or a work-related discipline/field from an accredited college or university. (required)
  • Out of state applicants must be willing to file for California reciprocity with the state of California within 90 days of employment. (required)

Experience Qualifications
  • Eight (8) years of related management work experience in an organization of approximately similar size and complexity.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to develop managers and staff.
  • Ability to drive a culture of proactive, integrated, high-quality patient care, innovation, transformation, and change at SHC.
  • Ability to quickly learn new tools and theories in process improvement/change management.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, demonstrating excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to analyze issues and to create an effective plan to address them.
  • Ability to evaluate the department's outcomes critically and comprehensively.
  • Ability to identify, collect and analyze data.
  • Ability to establish the strategic direction and business plans for the department.
  • Ability to form and maintain positive and collaborative relationships with members of the executive team, and others.
  • Proven experience with mandated reporting, APS/CPS, domestic violence, and vulnerable populations.
  • Proven success in designing, developing, and administering programs.
  • Proven experience creating and implementing departmental standards, systems, staffing plans, and processes.
  • Knowledge of managed care and commercial insurance, MediCal, Medicare, and other third-party reimbursements.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of case management, discharge planning, utilization management, and support functions.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of organization, administration, fiscal, and personnel management.

Licenses and Certifications
  • LCSW - Licensed Medical Social Worker - State Licensure
