The Adyen Issuing product is an API-driven product for generating physical and virtual payment cards for business use cases. We are building a deceptively simple api that is scheme agnostic, and that hides the huge complexity of getting money back into our customers account. The issuing product has entered a phase of hyper-growth, and many new backend systems are currently being built to accommodate the 100x growth expected over the near term.
As Team Lead you will be part of a dynamic cross-functional team of motivated individuals who help each other achieve remarkable results every day. We face unique technical challenges at scale and solve them together, delivering innovative and ethical solutions that transform the way the world’s finances work.
What you’ll do
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Collaborate closely with product, engineers, data engineers, and other key stakeholders within Adyen.
- Product Strategy: Craft a long-term vision for your team's product together with your product counterpart, balancing trade-offs pragmatically and aligning it with the overarching company vision.
- Team Motivation and Coaching: Exhibit leadership and inspire your team members, acting as a catalyst by coaching in areas such as engineering best practices, scalable architecture design, and product roadmap planning, thus having a multiplier effect.
- Goal Setting: Establish clear individual and team objectives that harmonize with Adyen's strategic data and engineering ambitions, working closely with the product manager to achieve alignment.
- Team Environment: Cultivate an inspirational and collaborative team environment characterized by open communication and a culture of constructive feedback, focusing on autonomy, ownership, collaboration, communication, and impact.
- Talent Acquisition: Lead the recruitment of new team members who embody the Adyen culture and possess the requisite skills to make meaningful contributions.
- Feature Development: Collaborate with different teams to design and implement new features, considering reliability, infrastructure, data, and development needs. Be hands-on yourself in the development of these features, while balancing that with your team’s needs.Â
Who you are
- Extensive Experience: Bring 7+ years in the software development industry within a fast-paced tech environment, including at least 2 years of leadership experience.
- Technical Proficiency: Expertise in Core Java, web services, queueing and streaming frameworks, REST APIs and SQL/PostgreSQL. Good understanding also of building frontend applications leveraging well established frameworks such as React, Typescript, Vue.js.Â
- Innovative Mindset: Not afraid to challenge the status quo and possess an innate curiosity to question the "why."
- Leadership Qualities: Dynamic self-starter adept at fostering alignment across multiple teams, with strong coaching and mentoring capabilities, and experienced in leading technical projects in a fast-paced environment.
- Strategic Thinking: Proven track record of collaborating with senior leadership to shape strategic direction, including product roadmaps.
- Communication and Team Player: Exceptional communicator who can clearly explain technical concepts to non-engineers, foster a culture of collaboration, and exhibit robust management skills and technical acumen.
- Hands-On Approach: Comfortable with hands-on work in our codebase and able to define, implement, and monitor performance KPIs to quickly identify opportunities for improvement in existing systems.Â
Minimum Qualifications:
- 2+ years experience in managing engineering teams within an Java environmentÂ
- 7+ years of experience in software development in a fast paced tech environment

The annual base salary range for this role is $150,000 - $210,000; to learn more about our compensation philosophy, please click here.
This role is based out of our Chicago office. We are an office-first company and value in-person collaboration; we do not offer remote-only roles.
