Role Summary
As an Engineering Technician you will be responsible for a variety of tasks related to our fleet of engineering vehicles. You must have a strong mechanical, pneumatic & electrical aptitude and be able to diagnose, repair and replace a variety of often delicate components. You will be working closely with engineers and other technicians, collaborating, and communicating in a fast-paced environment
Key Responsibilities
• Work with cross-functional teams of engineers and designers to implement or integrate new and developing systems.• Capable of designing, fabricating, assembling, testing, deploying, repairing, troubleshooting various testing rigs and systems integrated into and independent of Waymo SDS vehicles. • Demonstrate electrical skill set including Electrical diagnosis, harness creation, connector pinning / de-pinning and familiarity using a DVOM.• Complete tasks outside of established processes when necessary and propose/implement creative solutions to unforeseen roadblocks.• Complete reports, procedures, and tests to collect data for the Waymo engineering team. • Demonstrate leadership alongside managers by providing exemplary hands-on skills, technical writing, and verbal communication practices. • Service and troubleshoot self-driving systems, components, and integrated sensor stacks using internal proprietary tools.• Diagnose OEM base vehicle systems and components using manufacturer-provided software and tools, specializing in CAN, LIN, and FlexRay.• Maintain fleet of Self Driving Vehicles including standard vehicle maintenance activities• Vehicle flashing and diagnosis using various PC software's, as well as using Google Suite, CAD, and other online resources to update work orders, fill out spreadsheets, and provide reports to the appropriate teams. • This job description is not intended to be all-inclusive. Key Qualifications/Requirements
• 5+ years experience in an automotive research/development environment.• Strong diagnostic troubleshooting experience with OEM systems: high-level experience working with vehicle communication systems (i.e., CAN, FlexRay, LIN), HVAC, cooling, and vehicle subsystems (chassis, electrical and suspension).• Ability to adhere to a schedule of operating times for the assigned shift including, but not limited to, working on holidays, weekends, nights, and overtime as needed. • Must be willing and able to travel on short notice to support fleet needs - could be up to 15% of the time.• Experience working in a matrix organization, thrives working in a rapidly changing and evolving environment, independently and with cross functional teams.• Vehicle Prototype experience• Experience with instrumentation (Pressure Transducers, Thermo-couples, Flow-meters, etc.)• Good computer skills• Demonstrate flexibility and open-mindedness
Additional Information
• 4+ years experience as a shop lead/master tech.• 5+ years experience in an automotive research/development environment.• 2+ years experience working with ADAS systems and/or other self-driving systems preferred.• Ability to operate comfortably within and troubleshoot Linux based systems.• Excellent multi-tasking.• Diagnostic experience with embedded modules, self-driving systems, and sensor stacks.• High School Diploma or equivalent• Associates Degree preferred• Ability to obtain and maintain a Hi-lo license, crane operator license.• Able to operate two-post vehicle hoist, lifting equipment• Familiar with operating tire mounting equipment and alignment rack• Welding certification required.• Journeyman or Apprenticeship preferred
