Job Description

Clinical Responsibilities:

    • Conduct comprehensive patient evaluations for symptoms related to the digestive system, including taking medical history, physical examinations, and ordering appropriate diagnostic tests.
    • Diagnose and manage a wide range of GI conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), peptic ulcers, colon cancer, liver disease, pancreatitis, and biliary tract disorders.
    • Perform endoscopic procedures including colonoscopies and upper endoscopies.  Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), and endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) to visualize the GI tract, obtain biopsies, and perform therapeutic interventions.  (ERCP & EUS experience is beneficial but not required).
    • Interpret and analyze results from endoscopic procedures, imaging studies (e.g., barium studies, CT scans, MRIs, and laboratory tests to formulate accurate diagnoses.
    • Develop and implement treatment plans including medication management, dietary modifications, lifestyle changes, and referral to other specialists when necessary.
    • Refer patients to other medical professionals and specialists if further diagnostic testing or treatment is warranted. 
    • Incorporate acceptable standards of professional practice as well as practice goals to improve patient safety, quality and satisfaction.

Hospital Requirements: Must obtain and maintain hospital privileges.  Must participate in the required call rotational schedule with our call group.  Will work in conjunction with the support of midlevel’s assistance. 

Procedural Skills:

    • Perform therapeutic endoscopic procedures such as polypectomy, dilation, stent placement, and hemostasis for bleeding lesions
    • Conduct liver biopsies to diagnose liver diseases
    • Possess expertise in advanced endoscopic techniques depending on practice focus and training

Patient Education and Communication:

    • Provide clear explanations of diagnoses, treatment options, and potential risks and benefits to patients
    • Counsel patients on preventive measures for GI diseases, including dietary changes and screening guidelines
    • Effectively communicate with patients and their families regarding their health status and treatment plans

Collaboration and Leadership:

    • Collaborate with other healthcare professionals including surgeons, primary care physicians, radiologists, medical representatives, and nurses to manage complex cases
    • May participate in clinical research studies related to gastroenterology
    • Provide mentorship and supervision to trainees and other healthcare providers 

Requirements/Qualifications

    • Doctorate degree, and completion of medical school.  Board certified in GI. 
    • Full completion of residency & fellowship program.
    • Medical license in the state of North Carolina as a Physician.
    • Must obtain and maintain a valid DEA registration and prescribe in accordance with all applicable NC guidelines including participation in mandatory narcotic training.
    • Must obtain and maintain valid ACLS/BLS certification, must also obtain and upkeep required CME’s to maintain required licensure.
    • Must successfully obtain and maintain hospital privileges &  must participate in call with our rotating provider call group. 
    • Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and/or interact appropriately to the patients served at our practice.
    • Demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain professional, positive, caring relationships with administration, management, physicians, APP’s, ancillary support staff and patients/families. 
    • Demonstrate the ability to work productively and effectively in a complex environment, handle multiple/changing priorities and specialized equipment as appropriate. 
    • Demonstrate good clinical judgment and critical thinking skills necessary to exercise and lead others in the application of acceptable standards of practice. 
    • Possess the necessary physical stamina required for frequent walking, standing, lifting and positioning of patients.  Must demonstrate excellent mobility and visual manual dexterity.
