The area of focus for the Group Leader for Network Reliability Engineering role will be to increase service stability through automation, tools, and processes. This individual will be engaged in major production triage efforts and work with problem management in the identification of root cause of highly impactful or complex issues as required. This individual will use the knowledge gained in those efforts to partner closely with software developers, production services, architects, and infrastructure teams to drive delivery of automated solutions to eliminate operational inefficiencies and improve stability.
This position will interface directly with internal stakeholders and external suppliers/providers, architecture, network engineering, service management, and senior and business management. Strong communication and problem-solving skills are a must. The candidate must be able to work on their own and successfully in team settings in various sizes and locations. Adherence and use of standards, product sets, templates, systems, and artifacts are important to the success of the individual, the department, and to the overall MITRE community. The Network Reliability Engineer Group Leader (also known as NRE) will be considered a subject matter expert in their field and is expected to stay current with various technologies, organizational goals, and industry trends to drive end to end value.
Responsibilities Include:
- Maintain production environment with a high level of service availability. Perform quality reviews and manage operational issues
- Provide leadership and direction to the NRE and DevOps staff responsible for break-fix, uptime, and reliability for all network services
- Explore and innovate new cloud and HA technologies, features, and tools
- Implement automation and orchestration for manual processes required to sustain and deploy services, and be at the heart of developing new ideas into internal Ops/NRE tools by working closely with other teams of Engineering Professionals
- Participate in deep technical design discussions within your team, and across partner teams, and ensure that we're building the right systems and keeping the quality high.
- Develop and maintain a catalog of reliability scripts, tools and libraries that can be leveraged for common instrumentation, automation, and operational needs to identify and remediate network events
- Provide next level escalation support for production triage efforts
- Manage a continuous improvement / continuous development (CI/CD) pipeline for network development and testing
- Participate in the documentation of application/network flows for various support needs
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior members of the team
Required Skills:
- Set the direction and strategy for your team, and help shape the overall NRE program by driving the Network Reliability Engineering behaviors to Codify, Automate, Test, Monitor, and Measure effectiveness.
- Expert in networking principles and network reliability and sustainment
- Experience with cloud technologies (AWS, GCP, etc.) is a must
- Experience in software development supporting production networks
- Understanding of GIT workflows, continuous improvement / continuous development (CI/CD) concepts and how they can be applied to network automation and a testing framework
- Experience with automation/configuration management using either Terraform, Ansible, Puppet, Chef or an equivalent
- Deep understanding of the software delivery process with the ability to implement and enforce that process across the organization
- Experience with JIRA and Confluence
- Experience with Agile and Lean philosophies
- Strong verbal and written communication skills and ability to work with all levels of management
- The ability to provide leadership skills (self-starter / self-motivated)
- Organized and detail oriented
- Strong technical acumen
- Strong analytical skills
Desired Skills:
- Experience in Networking-related disciplines within a design, implementation, or operations role
- Relevant industry certifications in Network Technologies
- Experience with various network vendors such as Cisco, Juniper, Arista, F5, Infoblox, etc.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Applicants selected for this position will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or applicants who are eligible for security clearances.
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or equivalent experience plus 8 years of experience
Required Qualifications:
- Experience in creating engineering designs, implementation plans, and operating models for network infrastructure services for a medium to large scale enterprise environment
- Working knowledge of network/security automation
- Combination of 5-8 years network experience plus 3-5 years technical project management, plus 5-8 years in a technical leadership role.
- Proactive, independent thinker and problem solver who likes to be challenged and maintain a growth mindset
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, and strong written documentation skills
- Experience with full-scope project work: technical and non-technical requirements such as budgeting, training, equipment, support, and labor
- Solid understanding of networking and Internet protocols, and implementation of appropriate security controls.
- Will be required to obtain and maintain a Secret clearance.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Industry Certifications, e.g., Cisco, Juniper, Cloud Technologies, Agile, PMP, etc.
- Ansible, Terraform or other automation technologies/products
- Experience working in an Agile or DevOps model
- Active Secret clearance
