About the role:

Dr. Squatch continues to grow, bricc by bricc, and we are looking for a Head of Legal to join Team Squatch. The Head of Legal will be a key leader and business partner for our executive team. The Head of Legal will be the primary company contact for our legal matters, engaging with external counsel as appropriate. The Head of Legal will develop draft contract templates and review contracts from vendors/partners. The Head of Legal must be comfortable with discussions around employment law as this position will support the People & Culture team in company’s compliance with federal, state,  and local regulations. 

The Head of Legal must have prior experience working in a legal role in the consumer-packaged goods (CPG) industry, and the ideal candidate has experience working in an organization with a blend of corporate and manufacturing employees. The Head of Legal will be an individual contributor without direct reports; however, the role will have matrixed support from other members of People & Culture.

This role will report to the Chief People Officer. 

This is a full-time, hybrid role with company benefits based at Squatch HQ in Marina del Rey, CA. Hybrid expectation is 2 days per week at Squatch HQ with occasional visits to our manufacturing facility in Brea, CA, as necessary.

The anticipated base compensation range for this role will be $150,000 to $200,000. Compensation will be commensurate with the candidate's experience and local market rates.

What you'll do:

  • Serve as a trusted business partner and advisor for executives and teams such as Operations, Marketing, Product Development, and more.
  • Be the primary company contact for all legal matters, including engaging with external counsel(s).
  • Maintain knowledge of existing and developing laws/regulations related to employment and company’s industry, assessing and explaining how new requirements may affect the business’ risk exposure.
  • Develop contract draft templates for frequent business needs.
  • Review contracts as part of negotiations with potential partners and vendors. 
  • Draft and/or edit applicable HR legal documents including but not limited to severance plans, employment-related contract clauses, and agreement templates.
  • Identify or create opportunities to increase productivity and efficiency in legal operations and processes.
  • Develop and/or contribute to legal response strategy as necessary.
  • Serve as primary contact with workers’ compensation partner regarding claims activities
  • Manage business critical legal, employment and compliance projects on an as needed basis.
  • Provide practical legal counsel on US and global privacy laws for Dr. Squatch
  • Ensure Dr. Squatch complies with all regulatory requirements governing customer data collection, use, and data subject requests
  • Oversee and maintain our legal contracts and policies, including our privacy policy, cookie policy, and data processing addendums
  • Support the negotiation and execution of privacy terms in high-risk contracts

About you:

  • J.D. from an accredited law school
  • Licensed to practice law in California
  • 4-6+ years of experience post law school, with at least 2 years of experience working in a legal role at a CPG company
  • Exceptional project management skills
  • Experience with contracts beyond execution only.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, comfortable working and engaging with all levels of an organization as needed
  • Critical thinking skills with the ability to work independently, solving problems
  • High attention to detail, while maintaining confidentiality of employee, business and related information
  • In-depth knowledge of state, federal, and international privacy laws, including CCPA and GDPR
  • Interest in health and wellness, personal care, and/or eCommerce industries
  • Someone who gets things done without perfect resources is innovative and works with a sense of urgency
  • Someone who has high standards takes ownership and is invested in the outcome
  • Someone who proactively helps others stays positive and has a good sense of humor
