Corteva Agriscience is seeking a Herbicide Tolerance Project Scientist to join our Biotech Trait Characterization and Development team. The successful candidate will lead field crop tolerance testing activities and participate on multidisciplinary, cross-functional teams to develop, characterize, and advance Biotech herbicide trait technologies in corn for Corteva's Global Seeds Business. Purpose: To manage global testing programs characterizing the field performance of traits that support the technical objectives of Biotechnology and product development goals of Corteva Agriscience. Leads crop tolerance (efficacy) characterization of herbicide traits in corn, including development of key questions, resource and experimental plans, experiment creation, field observations, data analysis and summaries. Actively contribute to cross-functional teams, providing sound technical recommendations that enable advancement of transgenic trait concepts for the Biotechnology Herbicide Tolerance Discovery Portfolio and ongoing commercial success. Interacts with: Biotechnology portfolio and program strategy leaders, cross-functional discovery assessment teams, trait discovery and optimization scientists, trait characterization project scientists, trait and crop protection field scientists, seed production logistics team members, statisticians, regulatory scientists, global biology leaders in seeds and crop protection, and product stewardship personnel. Key Responsibilities - What You Will Do:
- Responsible for developing key questions, protocols (including submission for Legal Approval), experimental designs, and experiment creation to effectively characterize herbicide crop tolerance traits across multiple crops (e.g. corn, coy, canola, and cotton) for global deployment. Ensures alignment of key questions with appropriate stakeholders.
- Responsible for planning and alignment of seed and resources needed for successful efficacy trial execution with key internal teams (e.g., germplasm and seed production needs, permits, global sample services, lab analytical testing).
- Responsible for coordinating trial placement across both North and Latin America trait testing networks, working within approved project budgets. Provides technical guidance and facilitates technical training/coaching as needed to field scientist networks.
- Responsible for ensuring timely communication and collaboration with all key stakeholders. Makes in-season field visits to observe material and assist with crop tolerance evaluations. Responsible for organizing virtual and/or in-person field tours with technical program and commercial team stakeholders.
- Responsible for analyzing trait crop tolerance data from multi-location field experiments. Prepares and presents data summaries to cross functional teams and key internal stakeholders and provides technical recommendations often under tight timelines.
- Responsible for continuously updating his/her own scientific background in research areas relevant to herbicide traits, with the ability to prepare materials for inclusion in technical training materials or external presentations/publications when appropriate.
- Responsible for maintaining updated resource plans that support herbicide crop tolerance testing for assigned trait projects.
- Driving the Science: contributes to and encourages innovative thinking to explore questions and advance new phenotyping methods and technologies for trait evaluation.
Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills, Competencies and Experience Required:
- Advanced training and experience in plant sciences research. A Ph.D. degree in either Weed Science, Agronomy Sciences, Entomology, Plant Pathology, Crop Physiology, Plant Breeding and a minimum of 5 years relevant industry related experience is desired.
- Knowledge and experience conducting herbicide trials under field conditions is a must.
- Demonstrated ability to take research projects from conception to completion, including statistical analyses and interpretation of research results.
- Required to have excellent written and verbal communication skills that are necessary for effective local teamwork and participation in and engagement with an international scientific community.
- Candidate must demonstrate a collaborative mindset and have excellent interpersonal skills. Must enjoy working with multiple local and global stakeholders on multi-disciplinary teams in a timeline-driven environment.
- Demonstrated ability to innovate and strive for continuous improvement.
- Must be committed to a strong safety, diversity, inclusion, and sustainability culture.
- Valid driver's license and domestic and international travel required.
