Job Description

Hudson River Trading’s High Performance Computing (HPC) Network Engineering team designs and engineers the communications infrastructure that allows our large-scale (1000s of servers), heterogeneous distributed research environment to grow rapidly and operate optimally in support of our computing resources. The HPC network spans multiple large-scale data centers, and the team supports both the LAN and WAN infrastructure. We are looking for a Network Engineer with experience designing, deploying, and scaling networks for large HPC environments to meet the requirements of a premiere algorithmic trading firm.

This position requires both excellent project management and impressive technical abilities. You’ll have broad responsibilities and freedom to analyze and solve problems, and your solutions will have an immediate impact on our operations worldwide. We’re looking for someone with a love for technology and who is excited about tackling new and challenging problems. You will work on a wide variety of projects to enhance the performance and capacity of the network and contribute to both the management and the technical nitty-gritty of our computing architecture.

Responsibilities

  • Network design, routing, configuration and troubleshooting
  • Closely work with our HPC Systems and other teams to scale our research environment 
  • Project management - gathering requirements, tracking updates and providing detailed documentation in the form of diagrams, documents and spreadsheets
  • Managing and maintaining IP address assignments and configurations
  • Leveraging automation to optimize network efficiency
  • Working with remote data center teams to solve challenging problems, such as hardware, cabling, optics and more
  • Travel to global data centers to ensure project completion
  • Performing firmware upgrades on switches and routers to maintain network security and performance

Qualifications

  • BS in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related IT field or 5+ years of relevant experience
  • Incredible attention to detail and excellent prioritization skills
  • Self motivated, independent, eager to learn and apply new skills quickly
  • Willingness and ability to solve small technical problems in the field yourself
  • Willingness and ability to travel internationally as needed
  • You have excellent collaboration skills and a willingness to admit mistakes

Skills

  • Textbook understanding and some practical experience with common layer 2 and layer 3 network protocols and best practices such as OSPF, BGP, PIM, IGMP, spine-leaf architecture, and VXLAN
  • Experience with various switch vendors and operating systems, including but not limited to Arista (EOS), Cisco (NX-OS), and SONiC-based switches
  • Some experience in designing computing and grid networks, capacity planning, and full lifecycle project management
  • Familiarity with packet decoding and analysis tools such as tcpdump and Wireshark.
  • Familiarity with public cloud networks, such as AWS, GCP, Azure
  • Familiarity with configuration management tools, such as Ansible or Salt is desirable to support zero-touch network management
  • Familiarity with Python, Prometheus, Grafana, ELK, GitHub is desirable.
  • Knowledge of fiber optics technology and cabling standards. Ability to understand specs of various fiber optic transceivers.
  • Experience with Unix/Linux command line utilities and networking stack
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills: able to distill complicated issues into clear and concise terms
  • Able to create and maintain clear and effective technical documentation

Annual base salary range of $150,000 to $225,000. Pay (base and bonus) may vary depending on job-related skills and experience. A sign-on and discretionary performance bonus may be provided as part of the total compensation package, in addition to company-paid medical and/or other benefits.
