Infrastructure Engineer, Infrastructure and Tools

This role is a remote opportunity. If you are based in Canada, your home office will be located in Toronto, Canada. If you are based in the US, your home office would be located in Salt Lake City, Utah. You may be required to travel occasionally to your designated home office.

We have raised over $80M to apply machine learning to one of the most unique datasets in existence - tens of millions of images of cells under a huge number of biological and chemical perturbations, generated in our own labs - in order to find treatments for hundreds of diseases. Our long term mission is to decode biology to radically improve lives - we want to understand biology so well that we can fix most things that go wrong in our bodies.

The Impact You'll Make

• Promote a DevSecOps culture at Recursion. You'll partner with teams throughout Recursion to help them improve their capabilities to build and operate software quickly and reliably.
• Accelerate software development.  You will be on a team that builds and maintains the development tools that allow our world-class software engineers to reliably ship new code into production on a daily basis.  
• Improve infrastructure to be as efficient and reliable as possible. When you are processing 70+ terabytes of new images a week, and training models against large image sets from our over 3.5+ petabytes of images and 4+ petabytes of video, smart and insightful optimization and automation can make a huge difference.
• Act as a mentor, coach, and sponsor. You will share your technical knowledge and experiences, delivering impact, learning, and growth within and beyond the team.
• Deliver at scale.  Achieve quarterly goals, setting and adjusting expectations based on regular, iterative feedback from prototypes and shipping software tooling and infrastructure into production.

The Team You'll Join

The Infrastructure and Tools team is a team of engineers with backgrounds in infrastructure automation, software development, DevOps and DevSecOps. The team develops and maintains tools and infrastructure automation which plays an essential role in enabling people throughout the tech organization to deliver new functionality; helping us find new treatments for disease. Every software engineer, data scientist, and automation engineer should be able to make changes that ship to production in an automatic manner, and tooling supported by the team should make it as easy as possible to create new services, integrate them with our infrastructure and observability tooling, and deliver automatically, reliability and at scale. The Experience You'll Need

• Experience collaborating on technical teams and being resourceful and collaborative in order to complete large projects. We don't have much in the way of project managers.
• Past record of learning from and teaching peers in areas of performance, scalability, observability, or system architecture.
• A people-first mindset. Despite the deadlines, we always prioritize supporting our coworkers in their growth and experience.
• Experience with some of our existing infrastructure or similar technologies. We currently use GCP for cloud services building on cloud-native technology stack centered around kubernetes.  We leverage GKE for managed clusters, nginx and Pomerium for secure ingress, Prometheus and Grafana for the majority of our metrics, Cloud SQL (PostgreSQL) for most of our databases, Kafka (Confluent Cloud) for data streaming, and Python, ReactJS and Clojure for development.
• Comfortable working with current tools and methodologies to deploy and maintain infrastructure as code. We make extensive use of terraform and python for the majority of our work and are using GitOps workflows built on Atlantis, CodeFresh and ArgoCD to ‘automate all the things’. We build our systems to be reliable and resilient allowing our development teams to build on a stable, assured and scalable infrastructure foundation.
