Summary
You will serve as a INTERDISCIPLINARY PHYSICAL SCIENTIST/OCEANOGRAPHER in the OCEAN DATABASES BRANCH of NAVOCEANO BAY ST LOUIS.
This announcement uses the Certain Personnel of the DoD direct hire authority to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.

- This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
- You will be required to obtain and maintain a U.S. Passport.
Qualifications
- Experience applying professional knowledge of oceanography and a specialized knowledge of oceanography and the marine environment and its underlying theoretical principles.
- Experience applying a practical knowledge of oceanographic shipboard collection equipment and techniques, the analytical significance of oceanographic measurements, and the design and execution of oceanographic surveys. Must have knowledge and experience in computer programming on UNIX based and PC systems and the use of computers for data processing, collection, database development, and analysis.
- Experience expressing environmental data and information in written and/or computer-generated graphical form clearly.
- Experience being very knowledgeable in the handling of large amounts of data by computer and preparing and modifying computer routines for the reduction and analysis of the data. Must have a working knowledge of relational database management systems and Geographical Information Systems (GIS) as it relates to archiving of oceanographic data and construction of analysis products.

Basic Requirements:
- (A) Degree: physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.
- (B) Combination of education and experience -- education equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
Basic Requirements:
- (A) Degree: major study of at least 24 semester hours in oceanography or a related discipline such as physics, meteorology, geophysics, mathematics, chemistry, engineering, geology, or biology, plus 20 additional semester hours in any combination of oceanography, physics, geophysics, chemistry, mathematics, meteorology, computer science, and engineering sciences.
- (B) Combination of education and experience -- course work as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Administrative travel may be required for project coordination, meetings or scientific conferences.
Incumbent is sometimes required to work over the side or over the stern of a ship launching oceanographic equipment under sometimes hazardous conditions when aboard ship.
Work requires some physical exertion, such as long periods of standing, walking over rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces; recurring bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activities.
May spend as much as 50% of time aboard Navy survey vessels, requiring strenuous physical exertion. Will be required to work outside in adverse weather conditions during at-sea assignments. Field survey duty consists of rigorous demands, including extensive climbing of ladders, occasional moderate to heavy lifting, and the ability to maintain balance on an unsteady platform for days at a time. Cannot be seriously prone to motion sickness.
Non-survey duties are primarily sedentary and performed in an office environment.
This position is covered by the Department of Defense Priority Placement Program.
