Lead Engineer - DER and EV Integration

Eaton Research Labs (ERL) is currently seeking a Lead Engineer - DER and EV Integration of to join our team in Golden CO. The primary role of this position is to lead technology development and execution for projects related to integration and management of Distributed Energy Resource (DER) and electric vehicle (EV) to the electric grid, development of advanced control and optimization, and implementation of and validation of the integrated energy systems including microgrids. Relocation assistance and future work visa sponsorship will be provided, if needed.

This position will lead research and development in novel control and optimization methods to address modern power grid issues with ever growing DERs, EVs and smart loads. The Lead Engineer will report to Global Technology Manager and help identify key technical gaps and influence technology roadmap for Eaton's power systems products and services. This work will help businesses across Eaton solve critical business problems and uncover new business opportunities.

In this role you will:

• Serve as a technical and/or project lead in technology development and demonstration.
• Contribute to the development of strategies for technology roadmaps for specific applications that are linked to and supportive of the overall ERL and business strategies.
• Serve as a subject matter expert externally and internally. This includes leadership/active participation in external industry and technical groups, mentoring junior level staff and consulting internal business and engineering partners.
• Create innovative grid integration and energy management solutions. Support implementing state-of-the-art concepts and solutions into quick prototypes, feasibility studies, specifications, and eventually into larger systems and product components.
• Investigate, integrate and validate new product designs abiding by time-based milestones. Engage multiple business stakeholders, cross-functional teams, National labs, Universities, and Utility Customers.
• Innovate, invent and challenge state-of-art design & process by securing critical intellectual properties through patents and publications in reputable peer-reviewed journals.
• Serve as individual contributor and subject matter expert in government and non-government proposal preparation and/or project execution.

Qualifications

Required (Basic) Qualifications:

• PhD degree or PhD candidate close to graduation in Electrical Engineering or related field from an accredited institution, OR
• Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field plus 3 years of industrial or entrepreneurial experience, OR
• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field plus 5 years of industrial or entrepreneurial experience.
• Demonstrated strong experience in one or more of the following areas: DER management, grid integration of DER/EV, DER/EV controls and optimizations, microgrid controls, edge controller for PV/storage, EV charging infrastructure and DC microgrid.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience using one or more of power systems simulation software such as CYME, PSCAD, Simulink, or other electromagnetic transient programs.
• Experience with real-time simulations and hardware-in-the-loop platforms such as OPAL-RT, RTDS or Typhoon.
• Programming skills in Python, C++, Java, and working experience with Github and Docker is a plus.
• Hands-on experience with field or lab testing of PV inverters, energy storage systems, EV chargers, power converters and controllers.
• Experience in implementing communication protocols such as CAN, Ethernet, UDP/IP, TCP/IP, MQTT will be a plus.

Eaton provides a competitive total rewards package commensurate with applicable skills, knowledge, and experience and consistent with internal and external market practices. The annual salary range for this role is $95,300-$139,700 a year.
