The Lead Firmware Engineer, located in Indianapolis, IN, is a part of a growing embedded systems product engineering organization headquartered in Carmel, Indiana. The Lead Firmware Engineer, located in Indianapolis, IN, is a part of a growing embedded systems product engineering organization headquartered in Carmel, Indiana. Primary products of responsibility include design and development of electronic locking systems, access control and security to support residential and commercial markets.
What You Will Do :
- Lead a global team of firmware engineers that are responsible for new product development, product improvements and technical production support.
- Provide leadership to the firmware engineering team, which includes assessing, coaching, mentoring, motivating, and developing talent
- Work in collaboration with Engineering Product Line Managers to manage performance of firmware engineering team on various projects/products
- Provide firmware architectural support of the new product development products
- Define and document the definition/scope and requirements of firmware, designing and documenting the architecture and approach of firmware solution; coding, unit testing and integration of modules and subsystems
- Develop firmware for assigned modules within a larger system. Responsibilities include participation in firmware specification development, firmware architecture, design, code development, debugging, and participation in code reviews, documentation, unit/integration/system testing, and other assigned engineering tasks.
- Provide a proactive technical leadership position, with ability to think "big picture" for future growth, and successfully implement firmware engineering projects.
- Institutionalize firmware engineering process/tools standards to ensure high quality consistent output
- Manage third party vendors for development and maintenance done off-shore
- Manage project resource allocation
- Ensure that formal project management & tracking disciplines are used
- Provide clear communications to engineering leadership and others outside of engineering
- Work with and support manufacturing & operations in creating test code development to support in-line functional testing.
- Work with validation lab in supporting firmware engineering validation test code and product validation code testing
What You Need to Succeed:
- Demonstrated experience in firmware design, analysis and development from concept to production
- Bachelor's Degree required, Computer Engineering or Electrical Engineering focus preferred
- Min. Years Experience: 7 years preferred
- High proficiency in C-programming language
- Significant experience in embedded microcontroller system design
- Industry experience in access controls is beneficial
- Experience working very closely with hardware engineers to debug hardware issues and implement hardware test functions
- Expert in design & code analysis, utilizing appropriate tools.
- Experience with microprocessors and microcontrollers including PICxx, NXP Kinetis K-Series M-4 Cortex ARM, MC68xx, ATMEGA, MSP430, etc, and their associated IDE and tools
- Ability to use programming tools including Flash Programmer/EPROM Burner, Emulator/Debugger (ICE)
- Experience in Wireless firmware design and development compatible 802.15.4/802.11x radio systems, including Wi-Fi, Zigbee, Bluetooth, Z-wave and proprietary radios
- Linux experience with kernel development and Yocto on embedded solutions
- Strong leadership, motivational and interpersonal skills
- Demonstrated experience leading project teams to deliver programs on time and on budget
- Ability to work across multiple sites/teams domestically and internationally
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Self-motivated and self-directed with strong continuing aspirations to take on larger roles.
- Ability to maintain and improve existing designs and source code to help attain goal of having a modular structure
- Familiar with full documentation of design and test cases. Ability to utilize systems approach tools such as functional block diagrams, flow diagrams, simulations, fault tree analysis, state-diagrams, and others as required in product development.
- Expert in assessing hardware & firmware trade-offs to insure lowest overall cost, highest reliability and best performance in the intended application.
- Open to travel as necessary, approx 10% annually
