Primary Purpose:

Works under close supervision to apply knowledge of engineering, biology, and biochemical principles to the evaluation of chromatography and mass spectrometry related instrumentation used in the clinical laboratory. Schedule and perform preventive and corrective maintenance on chromatography and mass spectrometry related instrumentation (analyzers) that produce data or patient results. The functions of this position include the ability to master technical material and knowledge from many chromatography and mass spectrometry related instrument manufacturers including installation of new chromatography and mass spectrometry related equipment, troubleshooting, repair, optimization, interpretation of schematics, software and hardware requirements. Consult with senior peers on complex projects to learn through experience.

Essential Functions:

Masters technical material and knowledge from several instrument manufacturers for a limited scope of service

Applies knowledge of engineering, biology, and biochemical principles to the evaluation of chromatography and mass spectrometry related instrumentation used in the clinical laboratory.

Performs assigned repairs, PMs, and chromatography and mass spectrometry related instrument service activities as scheduled.

Documents all work, part and material usage, labor and laboratory interaction related to each Work Order in AIMS. Records must be accessible in AIMS and comply with all regulatory and department requirements.

Consults with senior staff on advanced maintenance and repair to learn through experience

Continues to increase knowledge and skills relative to chromatography and mass spectrometry related instrumentation and preventative maintenance through reading, networking, and attending vendor training courses.

Participates in required quarterly mandatory training and complete yearly education requirements.

Demonstrates professional demeanor in all interactions, and develops and maintains positive relationships internally and with outside vendors.

Satisfies on-call requirements.

Follows all policies and procedures of ARUP.

Notifies the laboratory staff and supervisor of instrument operational status during and after internal and external service calls.

Notifies the MSSE Supervisor when evidence of maintenance neglect is noted.

Meets regularly with the MSSE Supervisor to coordinate activities.

Prepares new chromatography and mass spectrometry related instrument site readiness documentation for review and submission to the supervisor according to department procedures.

Works with senior MSSEs, field service engineers and facilities group to prepare areas for chromatography and mass spectrometry related instrument installation. Coordinates with field service engineer and assists as necessary to ensure installation can proceed on schedule.

Monitors and ensures proper calibration and maintenance of all department related equipment.

Performs general administrative work, documents service requests in AIMS and maintains inventory.

Monitors all performance check systems and preventative maintenance programs for chromatography and mass spectrometry related instruments and equipment in the requested area.

Assists with maintaining current files of reference materials related to chromatography and mass spectrometry related instrumentation.

Acts in an administrative capacity to help engineering staff with AIMS data base and documentation.

Seeks senior MSSE, lead or supervisor guidance when assessing results, solving problems, and taking action.

Maintains department inventory of supplies, equipment, reference materials, and parts as needed. Identifies and compares instrument parts from OEM and secondary vendors.

Assists with the installation of newly acquired chromatography and mass spectrometry related instrumentation and software.

Works with vendor engineer on IQ/OQ/PQ.

Assists in the development and monitoring of a maintenance program for chromatography and mass spectrometry related instruments.

Assists in the training of staff through lectures and in-services, and preparing training manuals in chromatography and mass spectrometry related instrument maintenance, familiarization and basic troubleshooting.

Performs research, with oversight by senior MSSEs, for review by senior staff or supervisor to improve existing assays and validate changes. Assists senior staff to implement changes outline in research.

Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.

Mobility: The person in this position needs to occasionally move between work sites and inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.

Communicate: Frequently and effectively communicate with others.

PPE: Biohazard laboratory environment that requires use of personal protective equipment in accordance with CDC and OSHA regulations and company policies.

ARUP Policies and Procedures: To conduct self in compliance with all ARUP Policies and Procedures.

Medium Work: Exerting up to 75 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Vision: Having close, far, and peripheral visual acuity to perform a variety of tasks such as make general observations of depth and distance.

Fine Motor Control: Picking, pinching, typing or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling.
