Job Summary:
Assists and is trained to perform a variety of eye care duties to assist the eye care providers in the examination and treatment of eye disorders.
Essential Responsibilities:
  • Completes required classroom training and reading assignments. Successfully completes the Independent Study Course for Ophthalmic Assistants. Performs patient care under direct supervision during initial training period. Completes skills competency check-off for visual acuity methods, non-contract or application tonometry; manual lensometry; medical and ocular history including allergies & medications; blood pressure; appointment making and messages.
  • Prepares examination and treatment rooms by cleaning, stocking and arranging supplies and equipment which requires bending, reaching and moderate lifting of up to approximately 45 pounds throughout the day.
  • Review appointment schedule, interviews patient to obtain ocular history, instructs or assists patient in preparation for scheduled procedure including communication by telephone and in person, charting medical information and answering routine questions.
  • Performs basic and routine vision screening examinations using appropriate ophthalmic instruments and tools, and records data, including reading fine print and identification of colors.
  • Administers eye, medication (drops/ointments) as ordered by provider following appropriate practice and procedures.
  • Cleans and maintains ophthalmic instruments.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications: Experience
  • N/A
Education
  • High School Diploma OR General Education Development (GED) required.
License, Certification, Registration
  • Registered Medical Assistant (Washington) within 2 months of hire
  • Ophthalmic Assistant Certificate within 24 months of hire from The Joint Commission on Allied Health Personel in Opthomology
Additional Requirements:
  • Demonstrated Customer service experience and skills.
  • Computer experience in a MS Windows environment; keyboarding skills.
  • Strong written & verbal skills which will be utilized for patient history assessment, medical record documentation & patient/family education.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience working with contact lens patients and products.
  • Experience working in an ophthalmology or optometry practice.
  • General medical knowledge of cardiopulmonary resuscitation, anatomy, physiology, systemic diseases, ocular diseases,
  • Oocular emergencies and metric conversion fundamentals of microbial control.
  • Graduate of an accredited medical assistant, ophthalmic assistant or allied health professional program.
  • Medical Assistant-Certified credential or Interim Medical Assistant-Certified credential, Washington State Department of Health Interim credential which expires one (1) year from date of issuance.
