The Legal Department has an interesting position on the IP team as a Patent Engineer. This is an excellent career opportunity for an engineer who has a passion for technology, and enjoys detailed, analytical work with technical and legal documents. The successful candidate will obtain early exposure to company innovations and strategic product development plans. The role is to assist IP Counsel in implementation of the company's IP strategy, the continuous development of a world class IP portfolio and assisting in enforcement proceedings by and against the company.

The position could be located in either of our Milwaukee, WI or Mayfield Heights, OH offices and will report directly to the VP & Chief IP Counsel although work assignments will regularly be set by company IP Counsel.

Under the direction of IP Counsel, the Patent Engineer will:
  • Draft responses to USPTO office actions relating to pending patent applications
  • Draft original patent applications for company inventions
  • Assist with CPD tollgate processes to mitigate risk of infringement and identify patentable innovations
  • Conduct and evaluate searches of prior art documents
  • Maintain company patent portfolio maps; develop maps of competitive patents
  • Assist in foreign opposition proceedings
  • Assist in infringement analysis
  • Assist in determination of whether company patents should be maintained or dropped
  • Draft instructions to outside patent counsel relating to prosecution of patent applications


Basic Qualifications
  • BS degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science or related field.
  • USPTO Patent Agent status is required.
  • Legal authorization to work in the US is required. We will not sponsor individuals for employment visas, now or in the future, for this role.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Typically requires 8 years of related experience
  • Minimum of three years of Patent Agent experience in a law firm or technology company.
  • Minimum of three years of experience in design engineering.
  • Advanced degrees are preferred.
  • Uncompromised ethics and capability to work on multiple confidential projects.
  • Superior communication skills, particularly in writing (writing samples required).
  • Self-motivated, proactive, results oriented and capable of meeting deadlines.
  • Strong knowledge of Rockwell Automation products and services, particularly software products.
  • Understanding of software development processes.
  • Proficiency with MS Office tools, particularly manipulation of large data sets and report generation
