Job Description

US Got People (USGP) is searching for a dedicated professional to work as PHLEBOTOMY TECHNICIAN within the DONOR CENTER at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, in Portsmouth, VA.

Education Qualifications:
  • Education: High school equivalent and completion of a donor Phlebotomy program accredited by The Joint Commission or
  • Certification in addition to Basic Life Support: BLS Certification through American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • Experience Possess experience as a phlebotomist for twelve (12) months within the preceding thirty-six (36)
  • Registration: Must possess registration by the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or American Medical Technologist (AMT)
Job duties may include but are not limited to:
  • Perform a full range of phlebotomist duties to include proper venipuncture, fingerstick and heel-stick procedures using appropriate techniques, and perform set-up and completion of special test-related phlebotomy procedures utilizing appropriate Ensure that that all aspects of patient accessioning, specimen collection, processing, and distribution are performed properly.
  • Conduct patient in-processing prior to specimen collection, including review of paperwork accompanying patients and cordial guidance and
  • Assemble equipment, such as tourniquet, needles, disposable containers for needles, blood collection devices, gauze, cotton, and alcohol on work tray, according to requirements for specified tests or procedures.
  • Verify or record identity of patient or donor and converse with patient or donor to allay fear of procedure and conduct interviews, take vital signs, and draw and test blood samples to screen donors at blood bank.
  • Provide technical oversight and training to ensure that all invasive procedures (venipuncture, capillary puncture, clotting time, etc.) performed in the laboratory are done in the safest, most sterile, and expeditious manner, with minimal discomfort for the patient. Training may include newly arrived corpsman, nurses, reservists, and American Red Cross volunteers.
  • Perform phlebotomy-related administrative and clerical procedures of the front desk section of the lab, fully document all samples obtained per the laboratory’s standard operating procedures and maintain the supply inventory and cleanliness of the front desk and phlebotomy area.
  • Provide instruction on patient centered specimen collection (twenty four (24) hour urine, occult blood testing, semen analysis, ) and special requirements necessary for laboratory-collected specimens (fasting requirements, special diets, etc.).
  • As directed, perform basic "waived testing" as defined by Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA), to include screening tests and other tests cleared by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for home use, such as pregnancy
  • Provide services in compliance with applicable military installation and service written policies, procedures and regulations, as well as those of American Association of Blood Banks (AABB), College of American Pathologists (CAP), Clinical Laboratory Improvement Program (CLIP), and Joint Commission for Accreditation of Health care Organization (JCAHO).
  • Perform registration duties associated with blood drives on all prospective donors, including but not limited to, preparation of donor card demographic information, donor interviews and donor eligibility determination, obtain donor history, and input donor demographic data into the DBSS computer system.
  • Assess donor temperature and blood pressure and annotate on DD572 Donor Determine whether donors meet acceptable criteria for hemoglobin or hematocrit by the use of Copper Sulfate (CuSO4), spun hematocrit, or other valid method.
  • Perform phlebotomy using standard blood bags in accordance with established standard operating procedures, American Association of Blood Bank guidelines, and Food and Drug Administration
  • Recognize and initiate appropriate measures in emergency situations (donor reactions) following standard operating
  • Collect pilot tubes for donor testing after phlebotomy using the sampling device on the blood bag and review Donor cards for completeness
  • Weigh and prepare the units after collection for component processing in accordance with established standard operation
  • Set up mobile collection sites and tear down the mobile collection sites at the completion of blood drives with established
  • Prepare bags for issue at blood drives in accordance with established standard operating
  • Perform Daily Quality control on all equipment and reagents in accordance with established standard operating procedures Navy Donor Center and American Association of Blood Bank (AABB) standards.
  • Segment collected donor units in accordance with established standard operating
  • Properly ship blood products to processing facility in accordance with established standard operating
  • Perform donor aphaeresis procedures in accordance with standard operating procedures and perform component processing, inventory, and
  • Perform blood manufacture to include component processing and related
