Description
Responsibilities & Requirements:Â The APP will report to the Division Chief of Hematology/Oncology. Responsibilities may include all or some of the following:
- Independently assess and evaluate patients with benign hematology issues including anemia, cytopenias, and simple coagulopathies and hypercoagulable states at Stony Brook Cancer Center.
- Provide outpatient follow-up for inpatient hematology consultations.
- Initially assess and triage emergency department consultations.
- Provide coverage for infusion center when needed including managing and treating infusion reactions.
- Write orders for iron infusions, blood transfusions, and additional laboratory testing as needed.
- Review, evaluate, and make recommendations regarding laboratory findings for patients.
- Manage outpatient phone calls including toxicity assessments and recommendations.
- Provide coverage and management for sick walk-ins.
- Educate patients and family members regarding their diagnoses and therapies.
- Knowledge of basic software packages and hospital information systems (EMR).
- Additional responsibilities may also be required as the position evolves over time.
Qualifications
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Physician Assistant:Â Bachelor's degree (foreign equivalent or higher) from an accredited school of PA. NYS License and certification as a PA.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience in the management and treatment of cancer patients, especially hematology patients. Excellent communication skills. Experience with chemotherapy toxicities and infusion reactions.
