Job Description

Busy Neurosurgical and Spine clinic is looking for a Physician Assistant to join the team of providers to support in clinical and surgical patient care.

The right candidate is a team-player who is patient-focused and looking to carry on the great reputation of Southern Oregon Neurosurgery practice by exhibiting integrity, compassion, support, and care for patients and the organization. The Physician Assistant role is vital to the team care delivery system at Southern Oregon Neurosurgery, emphasizing the need to effectively communicate with the supervising physician(s) and patients.

General Statement of Duties: Responsible for the delivery of neurosurgical patient care at the direction of a supervising physician.

Supervision: Reports to Supervising Physician for patient-care related duties. Reports to Chief Executive Officer for all administrative and non-patient-care related duties.

Working Conditions: Work is performed in a clinic and hospital environment. Work involves frequent contact with patients and other clinical staff. Work may involve dealing with distressed patients. Work may involve irregular work hours, including nights and weekends. Work includes exposure to bodily fluids and hazardous materials. Physical effort requires full range of body motion. All of the following are essential job functions.

  • Must be able to bend, stoop, kneel, twist, stretch, and reach to gain access to all areas needed to perform required functions of the job
  • Must be able to lift, push, pull, and carry heavy objects, including assisting in the lifting of patients with a gait belt
  • Must be able to stand and walk or sit for prolonged periods of time
  • Must have adequate manual dexterity to write legibly and operate basic office equipment, such as computer and telephone
  • Must have adequate hearing and speaking ability to communicate with patients, co-workers, and medical community partners
  • Must have adequate visual acuity to read and interpret written material
  • Must be able to maintain composure under the stress of emergency situations, frequent interruptions, and heavy workload demands
  • Must be able to perform all required duties under conditions of sleep deprivation

Job Duties:

  • Obtains a complete medical history, performs a complete neurosurgical exam and records findings in Electronic Health Record
  • Interprets data to determine preliminary diagnosis and treatment plan for patients
  • Administers injections
  • Orders appropriate laboratory and diagnostic studies
  • Prepares electronic or written prescriptions for medications, including controlled substances
  • Provides patient education
  • Appropriately determines level of service for clinical examinations and follow-ups
  • Triages patient telephone calls and provides telephone consultation
  • Performs suture removal and wound checks for surgical patients
  • Provides call coverage with supervising physician, including consecutive nights and weekends
  • Provides surgical first assistant services
  • Communicates professionally with patients, medical providers, co-workers and medical community partners
  • Manages time appropriately
  • Attends required meetings and participates in committees as requested
  • Participates in professional development courses and maintains professional certifications
  • Complies with all clinic policies and procedures, including HIPAA and OSHA policies
  • Performs other duties as required/assigned

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of medical practice as it relates to assisting a provider in the delivery of neurosurgical patient care
  • Knowledge of medical equipment and instruments used to administer patient care
  • Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment
  • Knowledge of general computer operations
  • Skill in obtaining medical history, assessing medical condition, and interpreting findings
  • Skill in preparing and maintaining records and responding to correspondence
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining professional and effective working relationships with patients, co-workers, and medical community partners
  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in high stress or emergency situations
  • Ability to interpret and apply policies and procedures
  • Ability to read, understand, and follow oral and written instructions
  • Ability to communicate clearly
  • Ability to work effectively as a team member within the medical office

Education:

  • Completion of accredited Physician Assistant Program
Experience:
  • None required

Certificate/License:

  • Oregon Physician Assistant license
  • Certification from NCCPA 
Pay: Starting at $125,000 per year
