Principal Team Lead, Safety Engineering

A Principal Team Lead supports the safety engineering efforts. In this role, you will lead a team of the safety engineers, set performance goals of the work streams, prioritize the team tasks, manage cross-functional team dependencies,  and manage execution through the project life cycle. Your work will require collaboration with partners across hardware, software, operations, and product. You will be responsible for the team growth and the technical capability growth with their career path being developed.

The Motional global headquarters are located at 100 Northern Avenue in Boston, MA. Nestled in the bustling Seaport district with sweeping views of Boston Harbor and downtown Boston, the offices are located close to major transit lines and a quick walk to various restaurants and popular attractions.

What You'll Be Doing

• Build the team with integrity, trust, transparency, and accountable
• Plan & establish the team delivery that align with the established company OKRs and any customer’s need
• Manage the team work loads, prioritize the team work according to the delivery plan and track the progress
• Clarify success criteria, identify dependencies, and resolve the roadblock through the collaboration and escalations
• Build trusted relationships with cross functional teams to continuously optimize efficiency and collaboration
• Establish the career path goal and develop each team member 
• Conduct periodic retrospectives to improve performance and celebrate wins; continuously assess and improve the safety process and the team work
• Continue to grow the team and the team technical capability 
• Continue to promote the company core safety value and work with all cross functional teams to build the safety process rigor, deliver the safety work products, and to build the safety case with evidence.
• Able to travel domestically and internationally
• Other duties as assigned

What we’re looking for:

• Strong people’s leader experiences with strong mentoring and team building skills
• Experience leading a team of engineers in a product or project development environment
• Good delegation, collaboration, communication skills
• Demonstrable, hands on cross functional program management experience with complex technology products
• Experience in systems safety, systems engineering, or other related fields
• Understanding of product development or systems engineering life cycle, requirements development and decomposition, and system validation
• Ability to operate under ambiguity and adapt to changing environment and requirements
• Proficiency with both Agile and Waterfall
• Genuine passion for self-driving car technology and its impact on the world
• Experience with robotics or autonomous vehicles
• Experience with safety critical development (FDA, FAA, Automotive, Aerospace)
• Familiarity with ISO/PAS 21448, ISO-26262, or IEC-62304

Educational Requirements

BS, MS, or PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Physics, Computer Science, or another related engineering field required

Supervisory Responsibilities:

This position has direct supervisory responsibilities.

Working Conditions:

• While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to convey and detect communication
• The employee is occasionally required to remain stationary at times for up to 50% of working time; operate power tools, move in designated working areas; & operate and use office equipment
• The employee must occasionally move up to 50 pounds
