The Student Health and Well-being (SHW) cluster of the UC San Diego Health System plays a leadership role in creating a strong and active wellness culture at UC San Diego that enables all students to flourish in body, mind and spirit. This includes promotion and the expansion/development of a student health and well-being center, and the transformation of existing departments, under the oversight of the executive director, into a cohesive, trans-disciplinary source of integrated wellness services. The SHW cluster includes the departments of Student Health Services (SHS), Health Promotion Services (HPS) and Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS).
SHS provides primary medical care, including urgent care and support services such as laboratory, pharmacy, and x-ray to over 42,000 undergraduate, graduate and professional students. SHS staff consists of a diverse team of physicians, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, social workers, pharmacists, x-ray technologists, clinical laboratory scientists, medical lab assistants, optometrists, medical assistants, health educators, administrative and other healthcare professionals. SHS provides integrated clinical services to address the medical needs of the individual students, as well as to foster the well-being of the students as a whole person. In addition, SHS oversees the public health needs of the campus community. SHS is accredited by the Accreditation Association of Ambulatory Health Care and is fully committed to self examination, peer review, and quality control through the utilization of data, outcome, and patient experience measurements.
The Student Health Clinical Nurse is responsible for providing ambulatory nursing assessment and care of primary health and urgent care patients in a student health setting. The role includes triage, health education and counseling with a particular focus on urgent care, women’s health, family planning and immunization.
This appointment includes the role of student incoming health compliance, assisting in the process of UCSD University health requirements (tuberculosis screening & immunization).
While not required, a cover letter is highly recommended when applying to this position.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
•
Current, valid, State of California Registered Nurses License.
•
Current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS for Healthcare Professionals).
•
Minimum of six (6) months of experience working as a Registered Nurse.
•
RN experience in ambulatory care.
•
RN experience in an Urgent Care or Emergency Room.
•
Extensive knowledge of ambulatory/primary care and principles of first aid; skill to provide wound care and the application of dressings, proper use of heat/cold therapy, application of splints for immobilization of extremities; and demonstrated experience and skill in performing emergency procedures.
•
Extensive knowledge of reproductive health care and women’s health issues including methods of contraception, sexually transmitted infection, pap smears and pregnancy.
•
Extensive knowledge of medical terminology and the use of basic medical equipment.
•
Extensive knowledge of Universal Precautions, isolation protocols, sterilization techniques and maintenance of asepsis.
•
Demonstrated knowledge and skill to perform core nursing techniques (i.e. taking of vital signs, collecting lab specimens, administering medications, inserting intravenous lines, initiating and monitoring IV’s, setting up sterile trays, and assisting in procedures).
•
Knowledge of and experience in administering immunizations.
•
Skill in interpreting lab tests results commonly used in the clinic area.
•
Skill in screening and counseling patients.
•
Skill to keep organized and concise records.
•
Ability to communicate clearly and accurately both verbally and in writing. Excellent interpersonal skills, using tact and diplomacy in order to interact effectively with all levels of professional staff and a diversity of patients and a professional telephone manner.
•
Knowledge of routine, required and travel vaccinations pertinent to the College age population, as per CDC guidelines.
•
Demonstrated experience in using electronic medical records and understanding of medical record management.
•
Proficiency with use of computer technology and equipment, online programs and software, including MS Office Suite (e.g., Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and other electronic software and resources, and standard business equipment.
•
Ability to use discretion, maintain confidentiality and comply with all requirements in use of computer systems and access to any and all patient, student, employee and University data, in electronic and hard copy formats, in compliance with the University, State and Federal guidelines, including, but not limited to Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and and Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
•
Ability to work under pressure, calmly and efficiently, coping with variable work loads, intermittent delays and emotionally charged situations. Skill to make independent decisions based on sound nursing theory and practice.
•
Cultural competency in working with diverse populations including excellent communication skills and advocacy skills.
•
Ability to adhere to and practice the mandatory University Core Values & Safety Standards of performance, demonstrate at all times the characteristics of professionalism in attire, attitude, conversation, behavior and attentiveness to others; ability to uphold the UCSD Principles of Community and promote a positive and collaborative team environment.
•
Complete and pass test/quiz for all required training assigned by UCOP, UCSD and SHW on a timely basis.
•
Ability to at all times adhere to UCSD Health Medical Center (C.A.R.I.N.G.) Standards of Performance as applicable to position.PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
•
RN experience in a College Health Clinic.
•
RN experience in counseling in women’s health and family planning.
•
Current certification in ACLS.
•
Current UC San Diego employee.SPECIAL CONDITIONS
• Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.
• Must complete initial mandatory health requirements with current clear TB test results and influenza vaccination. In the absence of immunization records, titer or blood tests will be required to determine if other immunizations are needed.
• TB screening required, following frequency as prescribed by COEM.
• Influenza vaccination required annually.
• Must complete the initial credential verification process, & re-credentialing every 3rd year thereafter.
• Completion of the Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act (CANRA) form will be required, because this position is listed as a mandated reporter under (CANRA).
• Evening and weekend hours as scheduled.
• Occasional travel may be required.
• Must have access to reliable transportation to travel to off-site meetings and events.
• Ability to telecommute for work, if/when needed and operationally feasible, as determined by department.
• Must complete compliance courses and programs that are mandated by UC, UCSD, SHW and SHS policies.
Pay Transparency Act
Annual Full Pay Range: $131,335 - $184,078 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent: $62.90 - $88.16
Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
