Job Description

Do you want to help build real technology for a meaningful purpose? Do you want to fight to make the world’s fresh produce healthier, tastier, and more sustainable?

As a Senior Computer Vision and Machine Learning Engineer at Tortuga, you will be the link between revolutionary farm robots, the data they collect, and the farmers they’re helping. As a senior member of the Data and Machine Learning team, you’ll use your passion for machine learning, data management, and statistical analysis to manage powerful perception technologies to our robotic fleet and groundbreaking information to both our operations team and farmer customers. We will lean heavily on your understanding of machine learning fundamentals and your experience applying machine learning to complicated domains as you take models from prototype to implementation across diverse production environments.

What you’ll do

  • Apply modern machine learning and computer vision techniques to support robotic perception tasks applied to agriculture, such as detecting grape clusters in a vineyard or pests on strawberries.

  • Explore the evolving space of machine learning operations and model lifecycle management systems; drive the team goal of fast and accurate model turnaround for field applications.

  • Solve hard problems by applying cutting edge ML tools, frameworks, and research to complex problems found in dynamic outdoor environments.

  • Support data analytics initiatives that leverage our deep cloud data archives to derive valuable insights for our internal and external customers.

  • Work with other technical and operations teams to architect new ontologies, while developing exceptional ground-truth datasets with support from our third-party labeling partners.

  • 10%-15% travel, with potential for international travel; see how the models that you develop are functioning in live environments!

What we’re looking for

  • Required: 4-6 years of non-academic, non-research professional experience as a Computer Vision/Machine Learning Engineer or similar role

  • Required: BS in Computer Science, Mathematics or similar field; Master’s degree is preferred

  • Required: Understanding of data structures, data modeling and software architecture

  • Required: Experience writing robust, highly professional code in Python along with a knowledge of software architecture best practices

  • Required: Deep knowledge of math, probability, statistics and algorithms

  • Required: Experience working independently to apply cutting edge computer vision and machine learning technologies to robotic applications.

  • Experience with machine learning frameworks (like Keras or PyTorch) and libraries (like scikit-learn)

  • A history of taking on and owning end-to-end machine learning systems

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Ability to work in a team

  • Outstanding analytical and problem-solving skills
