Job Description

Summary

The primary purpose of this position is securing major philanthropic gifts from the private sector to meet the priority needs of the National Gallery and campaign goals as identified by Gallery leadership and the Board of Trustees. The incumbent reports to the Chief Development Officer. The incumbent should expect to be traveling 30% of their time. The successful candidate will have at least 15 years of front-line fundraising experience, preferably some in a campaign setting.

REQUIREMENTS:

Qualifications

Candidates must meet the Qualifications Standards Handbook requirements for the NF-0301-15

NF-15: Candidates must possess at least one year of specialized experience, equivalent in responsibility to the federal NF-14 level, eliciting major philanthropic gifts from the private sector while campaigning for raising funds for an arts-based organization.

Those applicants who meet the minimum qualification requirements will be evaluated against these factors to determine the best-qualified candidates.  Applicants must describe their possession of each of these factors individually in a one to two page cover letter as a part of their application.

  • Mastery knowledge of National Gallery of Art policies and procedures sufficient to manage a major fundraising campaign to elicit philanthropic gifts from the private sector in support of the Gallery mission.

  • Mastery knowledge of and ability to apply fundraising theories, pertinent regulations, strategies, and practices pertaining to nonprofit organizations and annual giving programs. 

  • Fully conversant in the objectives and overall design and operation principles of the Gallery’s financial, administrative and development policies, procedures, and regulations and thorough knowledge of various giving arrangements.

  • Mastery knowledge and ability to apply analytical and evaluative techniques sufficient to be proficient in analyzing and evaluating fundraising programs, thinking strategically, formulating long-range program goals, and developing strategies to achieve those goals. 
  • Ability to supervise others, delegate, establish priorities effectively, set deadlines, and take corrective actions with subordinates.

Examples of qualifying unpaid experience may include: volunteer work done through National Service programs (such as Peace Corps and AmeriCorps); as well as work for other community-based philanthropic and social organizations. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills; and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Time-in-Grade: Current Federal employees must meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement to receive consideration under merit promotion procedures.
