About the Role
As the Senior Director, Portfolio Management for Store N o 8 , you will be a key member of Store No.8's core team, responsible for managing the operational success of our portfolio companies. This includes providing leadership to the following key capability areas: portfolio strategy, performance management and portfolio operations (which includes both owned and coordinated shared services).
You will work closely with start-up GMs to serve as an advisory thought-partner to ensure roadmap assumptions, OKRs and other performance metrics are set, monitored, and met. You will have a firm understanding of the domains in which our start-ups operate, and provide strategic guidance and structure on any pivots, evaluate progress against milestones and prepare for exits. Additionally, you will provide strategic leadership to our Operations and Shared Services teams including building and delivering on a fit-for-purpose operating model for Store N o 8 start-ups.
Representing the portfolio companies, you will be the primary senior interface with all our functional partners (e.g., Talent Acquisition, Human Resources, Procurement, IT) and provide executive guidance on building effective models to support our portfolio. This will include negotiating custom service levels with Walmart in a manner that feels collaborative and inspires existing teams to accept changes to hard-coded corporate processes.
What You'll Do • Be the bridge between Store No.8 start-ups and Walmart's core support functions• Manage a small team built for outsized impact including 2 Director-level direct reports and other strategy and operations professionals to support the maturation and execution of the Store N°8 portfolio management function• Bring mature start-up portfolio management and value creation expertise, experience, and best practices to further build-out the Store No.8 incubation operating model• Conduct regular monitoring and valuation of the portfolio to understand value created by Store No.8 overall and by the active management of the Store N o 8 portfolio specifically• Provide active mentorship and guidance to Store No.8's Portfolio Strategy function to further drive portfolio value creation, including advisory that is grounded in contextual understanding of the domains in which we operate• Serve as seasoned advisor/mentor to leaders in our start-ups as they build out their business operations, refine their business models and/or evaluate pivots• Build out a mature start-up operations function including owned and coordinated services• Enable acceleration in our start-ups by building a world-class Strategy & Operations capability to drive shared-value activities (e.g., rapid onboarding, market intelligence, prototyping, etc.) across the portfolio• Provide active project-based leadership to Store No.8's Special Operations function that leans-in to provide time-bound consultative support to start-ups on a project basis (e.g., company stand-up, exits, infrastructure buildouts, store tests)• Serve as Store No.8's senior operations partner to Walmart's functional leaders, continuously evangelizing Store No.8's mandate and vision, refining and iterating support structures as needs evolve and thoughtfully balancing process with risk exposure• Identify risks and roadblocks that impede our start-ups from functioning at speed, escalating concerns to Store No.8 Leadership where needed• Active mentorship to help start-ups succeed within the parameters of a larger organization, removing barriers and obstacles that impact performance• Coordinate and build relationships across relevant Walmart business units to ensure continued stakeholder buy-in as initiatives mature
What You'll Need • 10-15 years of experience in business operations, start-up operations, VC or PE operations, portfolio value creation, early-stage portfolio management, with escalating responsibility• MBA and top-tier management consulting experience very strongly preferred• Experience creating and delivering shared and coordinated services to early-stage businesses• Demonstrated experience working with early stage/tech companies, with a foundational understanding of tech company operations, and value creation drivers• Self-starter with strong analytical skills and very high degree of comfort with change, iteration, and ambiguity• Able to build teams that create lasting capabilities including managing and influencing senior direct and indirect reports• Able to deal tactfully, respectfully, and effectively with a diverse array of individuals - from start-up GMs to senior functional and business leaders at Walmart; develop and communicates logical, convincing arguments to build support and influence even without direct authority• Strong and persuasive communication style with an executive presence to interact with very senior leaders across the organization• Able to identify problems and/or opportunities for improvement, assesses viable solutions, and structure and execute complex projects and comprehensive action plans• Ability to drive large-scale projects, define service levels, processes, and ways of working through multiple functions and teams• Convey a sense of urgency in ways that motivate others to achieve goals• Use relevant business metrics and analyses to measure, monitor, and improve performance. Identify and apply sound, fact-based criteria in setting priorities and making decisions• Highly organized and self-motivated with distinctive problem-solving capabilities• Collaborative and involve others in decisions and plans that affect them, when appropriate• Equally comfortable devising strategic initiatives and operationalizing tactical projects
