Job Description

About Generate:Biomedicines

Generate:Biomedicines is a new kind of therapeutics company – existing at the intersection of machine learning, biological engineering, and medicine – pioneering Generative Biology™ to create breakthrough medicines where novel therapeutics are computationally generated, instead of being discovered. The Company has built a machine learning-powered biomedicines platform with the potential to generate new drugs across a wide range of biologic modalities. This platform represents a potentially fundamental shift in what is possible in the field of biotherapeutic development.

We pursue this audacious vision because we believe in the unique and revolutionary power of generative biology to radically transform the lives of billions, with an outsized opportunity for patients in need. We are seeking collaborative, relentless problem solvers that share our passion for impact to join us!

Generate:Biomedicines was founded in 2018 by Flagship Pioneering and has received nearly $700 million in funding, providing the resources to rapidly scale the organization. The Company has offices in Somerville and Andover, Massachusetts with over 275 employees.

The Role:

The Generate:Biomedicines Information Technology team is on a mission to create an environment where Generators from all backgrounds can thrive and are enabled to contribute their best.  We are recruiting an exceptional Senior Director, Information Technology to plan, build, and run innovative and secure technology solutions supporting world class scientists and practitioners.  This is an important team leadership position spanning architecture, engineering, and operations for Enterprise technology in an intrinsically digital environment.  The successful candidate will be an adept integrator, not only of technologies themselves, but of the business outcomes they enable.

This job is for you if you are a strong, execution and outcome-oriented people manager, are deeply experienced in cross-platform and hybrid solutioning, and have led technology teams in a dynamic, change driven environment.  You are a leader who is passionate about creating capacity by streamlining and automating work, delivering digital tools to improve the employee experience, and providing exceptional service delivery and process execution. This role is based in our Somerville, MA office and requires an on-site presence with flexibility for hybrid work.

Role Objectives:

  • Maintain and manage technology execution against a defined IT Strategy and roadmap, with continual improvement and business outcome focus.
  • Proactively plan, build, and run Enterprise IT infrastructure components, including endpoints, servers, cloud instances and containers, ioT devices, associated operating systems, network components, security tools, applications, and SaaS platforms.
  • Administer best fit enterprise-wide solutions accounting for defined business deliverables and priorities based upon cross functional cost benefit analysis.
  • Manage associated staff and resources, and effectively liaise with service providers, technology vendors, and external partners.
  • In partnership with internal functions including architecture, security, and business stakeholders, evaluate emerging solutions and technologies, continually developing potential options and resources to facilitate long term business strategy and outcomes.
  • Provide thought leadership and input to senior management regarding technology direction, strategy, and associated risk management.  Champion change aligned with organizational decisions and defined outcomes.

Here's how you will contribute:

  • Manage and lead a hybrid team of cross functional IT professionals and service providers, aligning skills and resources with both day to day and strategic business requirements.
  • Monitor and measure the operational runtime environment, proactively tuning for capacity and interoperability considerations.
  • Maintain a disciplined, accountable change and problem management framework.
  • Provide programmatic troubleshooting and real-time “break fix” support.
  • Liaise closely with the security function within threat management and incident response workflows, supporting and executing required adjustments, mitigations, and remedial actions.
  • Contribute to disaster recovery / business continuity planning, and maintain processes to validate, test, and update associated mechanisms.
  • Maintain asset inventory across hardware, software, and service components, including close operational integration with the security function to ensure effective vulnerability management updates.
  • Maintain secure identity and access management and data protection mechanisms in conjunction with the security team.
  • Oversee end user support and training in use of Enterprise IT solutions.

The Ideal Candidate will have:

  • 15 + years of experience in IT operations management.

  • Deep knowledge of operating systems, cloud platforms, common SaaS components including o365, networking solutions, enterprise backup and recovery procedures, and systems performance monitoring.
  • Expertise in implementing, configuring, testing, and integrating emerging technology solutions.
  • Demonstrated ability to recruit, manage, motivate and develop a high performing technical team.
  • Significant experience in cyber security operations, potentially including threat & vulnerability management and threat hunting.
  • Understanding of and recent applied experience with automation, ML/AI, and orchestration tools and methodologies.
  • General business acumen with the ability to “translate” Enterprise goals and strategy into prioritized IT imperatives.
  • Experience in managing third party service providers alongside direct staff.
  • Understanding of and experience with GxP requirements in the health / biosciences / pharma space.
  • Strong familiarity with prevailing regulations including SOX, HIPAA, GDPR, CCPA, etc.
