Job Description
Owl Labs is hiring a Sr. Principal Systems Hardware Engineer to join our cross-functional team comprising of Mechanical, Electrical, and Thermal Engineering. This is a hands-on role where ideal candidate has core competencies and subject matter expertise in various aspects of computer systems and product design, and has successfully influenced decision-makers, product features and the customer experience.
What You’ll Do
- Collaborate with the cross-functional team to define, guide, and own aspects of system architecture product definition.
- Analyze key system trade-offs and proposing solutions including but not limited to, design of high performance / low power / high-quality products, guiding system electrical and mechanical layouts and feature integration feasibility.
- Participate in design reviews for electrical schematics, layout, power budgeting and thermal design, navigating signal / power integrity, EMC, and RF challenges.
- Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to develop system validation and reliability test plans which includes testing of, Thermal, Wireless, Acoustic, Signal Integrity, Power Integrity, and Stress testing.
- Take ownership to drive third-party labs for International EMC, Safety and Environmental Compliances.
- Collaborate with design, test, and manufacturing engineers to define design and/or process improvements to address reliability issues based on understanding of root causes
- Define product test methodology and test coverage to assure product reliability to de-risk designs from prototype to production
- Responsible for board bring-up; defining bring-up plan and execution
- Responsible for defining manufacturing test plan at board and system level. Work closely with 3rd party test fixture vendors to define, develop and validate test fixtures for manufacturing tests.
Qualifications
- BS EE w/ 15+ years or MS EE w/ 12+ years overall experience
- Must have hands-on experience in prototype bring-up and debugging, functional verification, and manufacturing support
- Must have created and influenced system specification documents for electrical, power delivery, thermal and physical fit requirements
- Ability to navigate hi-speed design and layout rules of modern interfaces
- Preferred ability to navigate audio / video interfaces and devices including microphones, speakers, and CMOS imaging sensors
- Preferred ability to navigate compliance requirements including EMC, Safety and Environmental engineering
- Preferred knowledge of industry test standards including ASTM, MIL, JEDEC, and IEC/ETSI
- Preferred knowledge in applying HALT, HASS, MTBF, Packaging and Transportation Test Standards and 8D process
- Familiarity with Electrical & Mechanical Stress Testing, Environmental Stress Testing, Fatigue Testing, Vibration and Shock Testing and common manufacturing techniques / technologies
- Ability to drive vendors for Design of Experiments (DOE) / Failure Analysis (FA)
- Experience working in a fast-paced engineering environment utilizing real time crisis management skills
- Strong analytical skills using data-driven decisions, back up assumptions, and develop scale of expectations.
- Familiarity with Altium or equivalent (Electrical schematic capture and layout), and Creo or equivalent (mechanical CAD); Analysis and Automation: MATLAB, Simulink, Perl, and Python
- Strong cross-functional collaboration, written and verbal communication, and presentation communication skills
- Regimented and methodical test engineering, data collection / acquisition, and analysis.
- Ability to travel domestically and internationally if needed

Owl Labs is over 70% remote and headquarters are based in Boston, MA. This role is an on-site position; remote option will be considered if the candidate is available for frequent travel to the engineering lab facilities at the headquarters.
