Senior Programmer

Tomorrow.io Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) division have decades of combined experience building and maintaining operational NWP systems. Our team’s diverse experiences and expertise allows us to quickly deploy a new customized model anywhere in the world and rapidly configure and optimize the model configuration to meet any customer’s forecast requirements. Due to this experience, our team supports the modernization of NOAA's infrastructure for weather forecasting through the EPIC Weather Modeling Initiative. 

We are looking for a Senior Programmer focused on large-scale modeling simulation systems with an emphasis on Earth modeling. The role is focused on defining, developing, testing, analyzing, and maintaining new and existing components of the Unified Forecast System (UFS) Weather Model and the UFS applications. The Senior Programmer will have a central role in the EPIC program and the Tomorrow.io applications. More specifically, the role will include the following:

What you’ll do:

• Work in concert with the EPIC product manager to ensure timely delivery of requested features by stakeholders.
• Collaborate with developers, programmers, and scientists within the EPIC consortium and the UFS community for designing and implementing new software programs and applications
• Analyze and assess existing business systems and procedures within the UFS weather model and the UFS application.
• Assist in the definition, development, and documentation of software’s business requirements, objectives, deliverables, and specifications on a project-by-project basis in collaboration with internal and external developers, users and members of the UFS community
• Assist in defining software development project plans, including scoping, scheduling, and implementation
• Conduct research on emerging application development software products for modular large-scale simulation systems, standards in support of tasks procurement and development efforts.
• Liaise with EPIC stakeholders and cloud vendors for efficient implementation of the existing and new UFS applications and for the resolution of any adaptation and porting issues.

What You Bring:

• 6 years of experience after the post-grad studies in software engineering/computer sciences with emphasis on Earth System Modeling or vice versa 5 years of experience after post-grad studies in numerical modeling in geosciences
• Proven  experience in best practices in software development
• Programming/scripting experience in Fortran, Python, C++, OpenMP, MPI, Bash
• Knowledge of Agile development principles (e.g., SAFe).
• Knowledge of Cloud Services in a Commercial Infrastructure as a Service.
• Excellent ability to communicate clearly and effectively with earth scientists, software engineers, data scientists. 
• High motivation to succeed and the ability to meet deadlines while multitasking.
