Job Description
A Senior Software Engineer in Observability plays a critical role in ensuring the reliability and performance of complex systems and enabling teams to quickly detect and diagnose issues. The Observability team exists to empower R&D engineering teams with visibility into the health and operation of our platform. They aim to provide the tooling and support that engineering teams need to enhance the availability, reliability, and performance of the Workiva platform.
What You'll Do
Empower engineers to make data-driven decisions on petabytes of data
Support systems with throughputs exceeding thousands of requests per minute
Develop expertise in observing software to help engineers scale their system to enterprise levels
Develop tools and processes to collect and analyze metrics, logs, and tracing data
Participate in the development and implementation of best practices for observability across the organization
Research and stay up-to-date with emerging technologies and industry trends related to observability and performance monitoring
Design and implement monitoring solutions that provide real-time visibility into the performance and behavior of systems
Develop, maintain, and contribute to open-source projects in and around the OpenTelemetry community
Provide mentoring and guidance
What You'll Need
Experience:
Minimum two years related experience, typical five years
Experience with distributed systems and container orchestration
Proficient in one or more programming languages and have a thorough understanding of software engineering principles, such as data structures, algorithms, and design patterns
Experience designing and architecting large-scale systems and able to make decisions about tradeoffs between scalability, reliability, and maintainability
Able to mentor and coach junior engineers and lead by example
Enjoy challenging technical problems
Capable of evangelizing coding solutions and defending technical opinions
Capable of independent work in a hybrid/remote team environment
Education:
B.S./M.S. in CS/SE/EE/CE/related field or equivalent experience
Preferred:
Experience with the OpenTelemetry specification, semantic conventions, instrumentation libraries and auto-instrumentation options such as agents
AWS platform experience
Understanding of service level indicators
Experience with OpenTelemetry tracing and metrics (agents and manual instrumentation)
Experience propagating meaningful context between multiple observability signals (metrics, events, traces, logs)
Experience with Observability infrastructure (openelemetry-collector, Prometheus/Mimir/Thanos, APM agents, Kubernetes)
Travel Requirements:
Up to 10% travel
Working Conditions & Physical Requirements:
May require after-hours support to resolve critical customer issues
Reliable internet access for any period of time working remotely, not in a Workiva office.
