We are looking for a Senior Staff Control Hardware Engineer. You’ll be part of a cross-functional team whose mission is to lead IonQ on its journey to build the world’s best quantum computers to solve the world’s most complex problems.Â
As a Senior Staff Control Hardware Engineer at IonQ, you will provide technical leadership in defining the future architecture of our quantum control hardware as we scale our systems for higher qubit count. You will work closely with technical leaders on other teams to develop requirements for ion trap and laser control. You will apply expertise in RF, analog, and digital hardware design and FPGA/DSP processing to develop innovative quantum control capabilities.Â
The ideal candidate will have experience leading multiple simultaneous initiatives, balancing multiple activities with a keen eye for prioritizing for the biggest impact. You'll enjoy hands-on lab work, working across multiple business streams, and be uniquely positioned to help us reach the next horizon in quantum computing.
Responsibilities:
- Work with cross-functional teams to define the requirements for quantum control electronics to produce ion trap electrode voltages, generate RF waveforms for laser control, and perform ion state detection
- Provide technical leadership in defining control hardware architecture, including board and FPGA functionality, backplane topology, form factor, enclosure, power, and cooling. Â
- Contribute to control algorithm development and partitioning across multiple, distributed processors (FPGA, ARM, GPU)
- Conduct trade studies for design alternatives and present recommendations
- Assist with defining testing methods and developing test plans and procedures
You’d be a good fit with:
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline
- 15+ years of experience delivering hardware solutions (RF, analog, digital, FPGA/DSP, and networking)
- 5+ years leading cross functional engineering teams in design and developmentÂ
- Familiarity with software defined radio and FPGA based signal processing
- Detailed knowledge of Xilinx Ultrascale+ MPSoC and RFSoC device architectureÂ
- Ability to support multiple projects simultaneously and manage time effectively
- Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communications skills. Ability to communicate effectively with cross functional teams
You’d be a great fit with:
- Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering
- Prior experience with quantum computing control systems
- Background developing linear feedback control and feedforward control systems
- Fluency in modeling and simulation using MATLAB/Simulink and Python
- Knowledge of circuit board design, fabrication, and assembly processes
- Familiarity with switched fabric backplane standards such as VPX, PXI, or MicroTCA
- Understanding of EMC/EMI circuit, chassis, and system design techniques
Our HQ is located in College Park, Maryland and we are a 15 minute metro ride from Washington DC. We have also recently announced our new manufacturing and production facility in the Seattle, Washington area. We are actively building out teams in the Washington D.C., Seattle and Toronto metro areas and will want to locate you in one of these geographies. However, IonQ will be expanding into additional geographies both domestically and internationally so don’t let this stop you from applying.
