We are seeking a talented Mid-Level Site-Reliability Engineer to join our team. The ideal candidate will be pivotal in building and assisting in conducting training sessions, contributing to the development and upkeep of diverse platforms. They should exhibit a comprehension of system architecture, adept problem-solving abilities, and the capacity to lead and mentor fellow engineers.

As a Mid-Level Site Reliability Engineer within our organization, you will join a team of dedicated unicorns who are focused on advancing freedom and independence globally. Our teams are dedicated to architecting, building, and deploying a cloud-native solution to both the Cloud and on-premises environments, ensuring mission capability. In addition to this, they also provide on-call support and conduct training sessions to empower customers with the necessary skills and knowledge.

Responsibilities: 

In this role, your focus revolves around ensuring customer success and satisfaction, all while fostering a culture of urgency and velocity. As an Operation Engineer, your responsibilities encompass not only contributing code and documentation but also collaborating closely with Product Owners to enhance our products. Furthermore, you'll play a crucial role in educating customers, assisting with or leading deployments, and assisting maintaining deployment to ensure smooth operations.

In this position, you will be expected to: 

  • Represent Defense Unicorns and Defense Unicorns’ values with Mission Heroes (customers) in public communications (e.g., Slack, issues) or in-person (e.g., conferences, deployments)
  • Resolve customer issues via email, video conferencing, phone calls, and in-person
  • Assist with or deploy Defense Unicorns capabilities for customers remotely, on-site, and even if you do not have adequate access
  • Utilizes technical experience, and specific knowledge involving Defense Unicorns Products, to deliver the technical aspects of the engagement
  • Support a mix of Software Factory and AI for National Security deployments
  • Collaborate with our Product and Delivery Teams to build new features and fix bugs
  • Create and/or update documentation based on Unicorn and customer interactions with Defense Unicorns’ capabilities and mission environments
  • Develop and maintain training programs for customers, focusing on familiarizing them with Defense Unicorns’ capabilities (e.g., how to deploy, how to update, fixes)
  • Participate in regular rotations for weekday and weekend on-call coverage, and providing emergency support to our customers and SLAs
  • Work alongside Product Owners, Project Managers, and Tech Leads to help define and shape the product goals, roadmap, priorities, and strategy based on your frontline knowledge of customer needs
  • Continually research and learn the current and future best practices of using Defense Unicorns Products
  • Participate in our hiring processes by reviewing applications and assessments, and participating in interviews
  • Suggest and implement improvements to various Mission Operations workflows
  • Communicates effectively with customers and Unicorns in written and verbal communications
  • Research and perform testing for Defense Unicorns’ product integrations by doing test deployments to verify product compatibility (e.g., Zarf on UDS-Core, Zarf upgrades on RKE2) for Mission Heroes the team supports
  • collaborate with Product and maintain Defense Unicorns reference artifacts

The listed responsibilities are not exhaustive and additional responsibilities may be assigned based on the evolving needs of the organization. We are seeking a dynamic individual who is able to adapt and take on new responsibilities as they arise. 

Preferred Experience and Qualifications:

  • Proven experience as a  Site Reliability Engineer or similar role, with a focus on system architecture, development, deployments, and issue resolution.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • Proficiency in at least one programming language (e.g., Python, Go) and a basic understanding of shell scripting.
  • Experience with security automation and familiarity with API Security, Container Security, and Cloud Security.
  • A grasp of cloud infrastructure design aligning security, performance, and resilience.
  • Experience in architecture security design, monitoring, and performance instrumentation in a complex enterprise environment.
  • Demonstrated familiarity with cloud-native technologies such as Kubernetes, Google Cloud, and Docker.
  • Familiarity with continuous delivery, distributed architectures, systems, everything-as-code, containerization, and cloud services.
  • Comfort with debugging systems, reading/writing code, and understanding Incident, Problem, Change, and Release management processes.
  • Hold a security clearance/Eligible to apply for a security clearance. United States citizenship is required.
  • Possess a DoD 8570 IAT II certification.
  • Experienced with Big Bang, Iron Bank, and/or C-ATO processes.
  • Knowledgeable about DevSecOps/DevOps and CI/CD theory.
  • Experienced in working on a team following an Agile framework.
  • Comfortable and experienced in working on projects with compliance requirements.
  • Experienced with Infrastructure as Code (IaC), Configuration as Code, and YAML
  • Experienced with automated testing.
  • Proficient with technologies such as K8s deployment & security, full-stack experience, transforming applications into K8s friendly formats, and scripting languages like Python, Go.

Full compensation packages are based on candidate experience. Compensation ranges are established using national benchmarking data and apply across all geographic locations within the United States.
