ABOUT THIS JOB:
The Digital Commerce Solution Architect is responsible for driving technical innovations across several product teams that are valuable and usable for our customers as well as resulting in sustainable, reusable, and scalable solutions. From inception to completion, you will develop tools and technology, learning quickly from our spirit of experimentation. Overall, you will have a direct impact on improving the performance of our business and ensuring customers can buy and sell the products and services they want in a way that's right for them.
As part of the Technology organization, you will have the opportunity to implement platforms supporting Carmax digital transformation and create best in class developer experiences in bringing business and platform capabilities to market.
What you will do - Essential Responsibilities
- Participate in the Digital Commerce roadmap for Carmax designing target state architecture and transitional architectures as needed
- Hands on systems design with multiple teams, focused on full-stack digital experiences and microservice / API creation supporting omnichannel
- Leverage and employ DevOps principles to help teams increase observability, scalability, speed to market, and quality delivery
- Work with teams to nurture a culture of experimentation to ensure teams are learning quickly
- Work with Enterprise Architects, Business Leadership, Product Leadership, and other Technology Leaders to create an overarching design of services needed to provide customers and associates with a true unified commerce experience
- Drive consensus of architecture and design by working closely with all teams to deliver a cohesive digital commerce ecosystem, as well as effectively presenting growth and maturity opportunities to stakeholders across all levels of the organization
- Identify opportunities for stability and resiliency, and ensure teams have an effective disaster recovery playbook (both manual and automated)
- Drive design consensus within and across teams while maintaining awareness across technology
- Find opportunities for teams to learn and implement new technologies and patterns, and develop/deliver technical training and business understanding for developers and peers
- Investigate new technologies and techniques, and research ongoing industry trends through a partnership with the Enterprise Architecture team
- Maintain and grow a deep knowledge and functional expertise of the supported technology ecosystem and touchpoints, and impacts of changing industry best practices for enterprise development and deployment
- Maintain and grow a deep knowledge of the retail, wholesale, marketplace and automotive industries, specifically from the point of view of how technology is being applied to power the customer experience from acquisition through retention
- Develop design diagrams and prototypes to communicate your architecture vision
- Maintain strong relationships with key product partners to ensure product plans are aligned with company objectives/plans
- Conduct architectural system design evaluations in support of your teams
- Partner closely with Lead Engineers to drive the digital commerce ecosystem forward. Make thoughtful decisions on the fly, constantly clearing roadblocks to getting to your target architecture
- Ensure target business areas have the appropriate level of awareness, knowledge, buy-in into our design and architecture roadmap
- Lead architecture discovery and drive innovation to identify forward-looking solutions, simple solutions to complex problems
- Creates and enhances guidelines, policies, practices, and procedures to drive improvements to the technical design and development processes; partner with other solution architects to identify opportunity areas and determine best practices
- Evaluate 3rd party vendor products within the context of architectural design and delivery in your solution boundaries.
Qualifications and Requirements

- 8+ years of application development experience
- 5+ years of architecture & solutioning enterprise Customer or Partner facing Digital Commerce programs across multiple organization
- Knowledge of ERP, supply chain, security, risk, fraud, payment, marketing, merchandising, and order management solutions supporting the Digital Commerce capabilities
- Proven ability to balance the needs of explicit sales channel needs while driving positive impacts around commerce user experiences and services
- Strong knowledge of key aspects of Digital Catalogs, Carts, Checkouts, Sales Orders, Inventory, Purchase Orders, Order fulfillment, and Order Orchestration
- Hands-on expertise with Microsoft.NET (#C) and .NET Core (or relevant experience)
- Hands-on experience with cloud hosted technologies and infrastructure, such as AWS or Azure
- Hands-on experience with DevOps capabilities such as automated testing, continuous integration, and continuous delivery
- Deep understanding of full-stack application design, including APIs, microservices, and front-end development (such as React, Angular, HTML/CSS, and other web design components)
- Previous experience in helping to set up strangler patterns both in future services but also with legacy solutions
- Passion around discovering ways in which to use a blurred Digital Commerce ecosystem as a strategic differentiator
- Experience delivering solutions across multiple customer touchpoints
- Exceptional communication skills, with experience presenting comfortably to and influencing technical teams, business users, and leadership
- Builds relationships; facilitates win-win solutions and obtains support from the organization

- Analytical; solves problems at root cause and prioritizes effectively; reviews quantitative and qualitative inputs

- Work location is flexible if approved by the Company except that position may not be performed remotely from Hawaii or Colorado
Education and/or Experience
- Experience with Digital Commerce channel agnostic implementations (B&M, Call Center, Web, Mobile Applications, and other touchpoints as needed)
- BA/BS Degree required. Master's Degree preferred
- 8+ years' experience in Solution Architecture field. E-Commerce experience preferred
- 3+ years' experience working in an agile environment
- Proven experience working with technology teams to create and execute on an application architecture
- Experience working within a product organization preferred
