Staff Electrical Engineer
Verb Surgical - a Google and Johnson & Johnson joint venture!


Mission:
To help create the future of surgery, we are building a best-in-class team and are looking for a robotics Staff Electrical Engineer with at minimum 8 years of relevant experience to mentor, design, test, and evaluate electrical hardware on a ground-breaking surgical robotic platform. This position places an emphasis on working closely with a cross functional engineering team to develop complex hardware designs. Candidates must be self motivated, highly independent and have an eagerness to learn and work as a team, and a desire to thrive in a very fast paced environment. As a staff engineer you are expected to demonstrate advanced electrical engineering knowledge, be able to independently determine approaches to difficult technical problems, and have communication capabilities necessary to interface broadly across engineering teams.

Professional Experience/Skills/Background to be successful in this role:
  • Proven experience designing and developing complex analog and digital electrical systems from concept through to production.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide technical direction and expertise to others.
  • Demonstrated experience with FPGA design. Familiarity with microcontroller programming.
  • Technical leadership and management of projects including outside contractors, partners and suppliers.
  • Thorough understanding of board level printed circuit design and high-speed signal integrity issues to facilitate cohesive development with partnered circuit designers.
  • Demonstrated ability to debug and test using oscilloscopes and other test tools.
  • Proficient user of CAE tools for printed circuit design.
  • Preferred: Medical device background


Education/ Training/ Certifications:
  • BSEE with 8+ years or MSEE with 6+ years in a related field


Key Accountabilities:
  • Design
    • Design complex and dense analog and digital printed circuit boards for various tasks.
    • Create and execute functional testing and debug circuit boards, subsystems, and systems when applicable.
    • Deliver appropriate documentation to support designs of critical PCAs in medical devices.
  • System and Subsystem Architecture and Definition
    • Key contributor on complex projects and initiatives.
    • Develop strong understanding of product requirements and usage. Work with Systems Engineering to develop requirements. Working with cross functional subsystem core teams, develop requirements, specifications, and architectures.
    • Work closely with electrical and mechanical engineers to define electrical architectures and interfaces driven by test and simulation analysis and results.
    • Specify and select key off-the shelf and outsourced custom subsystem components including computers and power supplies.
    • Perform component and subsystem level testing to ensure conformance to design. Testing may include EMI and ESD analysis, test fixturing, and thermal analysis.
    • Drive schedule and high level sub-team milestones and direction with minimal oversight
  • Subsystem Integration and Failure Analysis
    • Debug and analyze failures found during system use and bringup.
    • Document results and discuss mitigations with cross functional teams.
    • Define system level cabling and interfaces backed by sound logic and documented analysis.
  • Leadership
    • Lead subsystem projects and act as a mentor to younger engineers.
    • Define priorities with limited guidance according to program objectives.
    • Perform formal release of documentation in support of manufacturing satisfying quality and regulatory requirements for medical devices

  • This role does not have any physical demand requirements.


Expected Outcomes:
  • First 3 months
    • Become familiar with the Verb system architecture.
    • Familiarize with Verb engineering teams, processes, commitments and deliverables.
    • Participate in hardware development activities including PCA design and test, as well as architecture development and planning.
