Summary This is a public notice flyer to notify interested applicants of anticipated vacancies. Applications will not be accepted through this flyer. Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered for Selective Service. This is a bargaining unit position. You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination. Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (including marijuana) is required. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if you fail to report to the drug test appointment or fail the test. You will be subject to random testing. You will be required to work a rotating work schedule which includes nights, weekends, holidays, and is subject to mandatory overtime and recall. This is a Mission Essential position. You will be required to ensure organization or facility continuity of operations and/or completion of tasks that are considered essential to the mission designated by a local or command decision. Candidates for firefighter positions must not have reached their 37th birthday by date of appointment. You will be required to wear a uniform and use all safety apparel in accordance with established policies and procedures. You will be required to wear personal protective equipment and personal fire protection equipment during your work shift. Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs. This position requires the employee to work under adverse environmental conditions and will fall under the respiratory protection program and hearing conservation program. You will be required to obtain and maintain a current CPR and First Aid certification. Qualifications GS-05: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-04 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: 1) Controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, volunteer, or governmental fire department/brigade. 2)Performing rescue operations as a team member 3) Operating pumps, foam generators, and other similar equipment. GS-04 Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-03 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: 1) Controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial volunteer, governmental fire department brigade; 2) Performing rescue operations; 3) Operating fire communications equipment. GS-03 Your resume must demonstrate at least six months of general experience. General experience must demonstrate the following: 1) ability to follow directions 2:) To read, understand, and retain instructions, regulations, and procedures. 3) Ability to perform the duties of the position. ***All of the above positions require the incumbent to possess certifications GS-05: This position requires the incumbent to possess the following certifications: Firefighter I & II, HAZMAT Operations, and Apparatus Driver Operator-Pumper. The certifications must have been awarded by DOD, IFSAC or ProBoard to meet the requirement. If you do not possess all of the above certifications you will be rated ineligible. Copies of Certifications MUST be submitted with your application. GS-04/ GS-03 The position requires the incumbent to be able to obtain the Firefighter I and Firefighter II certification within 12 months of employment. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. Education **TRANSCRIPTS MUST BE INCLUDED TO BE CONSIDERED** In lieu of specialized experience you may qualify at the GS-05 level with the following education substitute: Successful completion of a 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university in Fire Training, Fire Science, or another related field of study leading to a bachelor's degree. OR Have a combination of experience and education that equates to one year of experience. The percentage of the required education plus the percentage of the required experience equal one hundred percent. In lieu of specialized experience you may qualify at the GS-04 level with the following education substitute Successful completion of a 2-year course of study in an accredited college or university in Fire Training, Fire Science, or another related course work. OR Have a combination of experience and education that equates to one year of experience. The percentage of the required education plus the percentage of the required experience equal one hundred percent. In lieu of specialized experience you may qualify at the GS-03 level with the following education substitute Successful completion of a 1-year related education or training. OR Have a combination of experience and education that equates to one year of experience. The percentage of the required education plus the percentage of the required experience equal one hundred percent. DEGREE AUDITS ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE. Additional information This position is covered by the Department of Defense Priority Placement Program. This announcement uses the Defense Industrial Base, Major Range and Test Facilities direct hire authority to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to certain positions in the competitive service. If selected below the full performance level, you may be noncompetitively promoted to the next higher grade level after meeting all regulatory requirements, and upon the recommendation of management. Promotion is neither implied nor guaranteed. This is a PRIMARY/RIGOROUS position for SPECIAL RETIREMENT COVERAGE purposes. Position requires the ability to discern colors, contrast, and depth. The employee is required to report for duty during natural disasters and other emergency situations as directed by the Fire Chief. Typical work schedule: 72 hrs weekly, 144 hrs biweekly This position requires rotating shift work, subject to recall May be required to participate on Hazardous Materials Teams (HAZMAT). Physical Demands Physical Fitness requirement at all times. The duties of this position are physically demanding and require a physically able employee. Ability to lift and move heavy objects, such as charged fire hoses, fire extinguishers, equipment, incapacitated persons, and litter patients. Must be able to wear protective clothing, such as firefighter ensembles weighing 50 - 60 pounds. Climbs ladders and works at various heights. The work requires above average agility and dexterity. To meet these demands, physical fitness training is required on more than a weekly basis as reflected in department guidance and instruction. Required physical training will be completed during duty hours and on each available shift. Work Environment Exposed to out-of-control fires, HAZMAT spills, or explosions. May suffer burns, dehydration, and other effects of heat; smoke inhalation, heavy protective clothing, falling materials, or explosions. Subject to physical injury and sensory damage from firefighting activities, exposure to HAZMAT and high noise levels. Must deal with victims in emergency situations that maybe in varying stages of fright and panic. Exposed to infectious disease. There may be hazards while operating or riding fire trucks at high speeds under adverse conditions. The employee works outside in all types of weather conditions.
