Title: Part-Time Instructor, Math
Reports To: Senior Manager of Teaching and Learning
FLSA: Part-time, Seasonal
Compensation: $40 hourly
Location: Miami-Dade County, Florida (Remote)
Spring Semester Dates:
- Pre-Semester Orientation: Wed, Feb 5 (5:30-8:30pm)
- Programming Dates: Feb 22-May 17
- This includes Saturday programming & some weekday evenings. Please see the full schedule below.
OVERVIEW
Instructors will join SEO’s community of passionate educators to implement a rigorous college prep curriculum for motivated and driven high school students. Using our original curriculum and a student-centered approach to teaching and learning, instructors play an integral part in supporting our Scholars’ journeys to a competitive college and beyond. Instructors promote depth of understanding and skill acquisition by serving as a coach and facilitator of learning. Instructors teach Math for 9th grade Scholars.

COURSES
For Spring 2025, the following courses will be offered:
- 9th Math: Numbers and Operations
- Skills include: properties of numbers; expressions, equations, and identities; ratio and rate; percentages; proportional reasoning; irrational numbers; linear, quadratic, and exponential functions (including compound growth formula); algebraic representation of functions; graphing functions and identifying key characteristics; modeling real-world situations with functions; systems of equations and inequalities; algebra with exponents; fractional exponents and roots; algebra with rational expressions and equations; properties 2D and 3D geometric figures; introduction to coordinate geometry.
PROGRAMMING DATES, TIMES, AND HOURS
- Self-guided Asynchronous Instructor Training: New Instructional staff will complete Asynchronous Training that equates to 10 hours of work. This can be completed on your own time and will be completed prior to the start of programming.
- Instructor Orientations: Wednesday, February 5, 5:30-8:30pm on Zoom
- Meet the Instructors: 9th Grade Instructors meet incoming SEO Scholars: Wednesday, February 19, 5:30-6:30pm
- Instruction: February 22-May 17:
- Synchronous Online Instruction
- Saturday Academy programming, 9:35am-2:15pm
- 02/22, 03/01, 03/08, 03/22, 04/05, 04/12, 04/19, 05/03, 05/10, 05/17
- Asynchronous Academic Support
- Hold office hours, meet with Student Advisor, and engage with Scholars’ work asynchronously
- Thursdays from 5:30-7:30pm on select weeks
- 03/03-03/07, 03/17-03/21, 03/31-04/04, 04/14-04/18, 04/28-05/02, 05/12-05/16
The Instructors’ weekly hours are made up of standard and flex expectations, varying based on the programming weeks. Weekly hours will range from 10-18 hours/week based on asynchronous or synchronous weeks of programming.
- Standard Hours are when the instructor must be working synchronously with staff or students
- Saturday Academy: 9:35am-2:15pm
- Asynchronous Week Office Hours: Thursday evenings, 5:30-7:30pm on select weeks
- Flex Hours make up the additional “instructor work” educators know go into the job. This is time spent preparing for the lesson, grading, entering gradebook data, writing Scholar feedback, communicating with staff and Scholars, etc. These are hours put in outside of the required schedule and can be completed asynchronously throughout the week.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Synchronous Teaching – Teach four to five math blocks on Saturdays via Zoom; occasionally co-facilitate with an Associate Instructor. Follow provided lesson plans and meet lesson objectives, abiding by SEO’s articulated criteria for rigorous instruction and student engagement.
- Asynchronous Academic Support – Provide intentional academic support by hosting after-school office hours, engaging in online learning practices including discussion boards and other online learning tools, and building cycles of consistent feedback and accountability in the learning experience during asynchronous learning.
- Navigate Instructional Technologies – Learn and efficiently utilize our instructional technologies such as Zoom (video conferencing and chat), Brightspace (Learning Management System), and GSuit applications.
- Content Preparation – Read, internalize, and practice all lesson plans and materials provided by SEO prior to teaching. Implement thoughtful adjustments to pacing and activities based on specific student needs.
- Grading and Record-Keeping – Provide actionable, growth-oriented feedback to students. Complete all grading in a timely manner (1 week turnaround) and keep the electronic gradebook up to date on Brightspace (our LMS).
- Classroom Culture – Project an energetic, engaging, and approachable persona to promote students’ connection to the content, investment in the learning experience, and positive relationship to all members of the community.
- Collaboration with SEO Staff and Other Instructors – Plan and work alongside an Associate Instructor to build optimal experiences for Scholar learning in co-teaching and/or single instruction models. Attend all scheduled meetings, professional development trainings, check-ins, and debriefs and respond to all emails and Zoom chats in a timely manner.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
- Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in content related field
- Educator or youth-development work with high school-aged students
- Online Course Facilitation Experience
- Comfortable with and skilled at working with and navigating technological learning systems
- Understanding and practice of student-centered pedagogy
- Expertise and depth of knowledge in Advanced high school-level Mathematics
Preferred:
- Secondary Education Degree and high school teaching experience
- Knowledge and experience with Universal Design for Learning (UDL)
- Certifications, PD course completions, and/or tertiary education in Instructional Technologies
- At least 2+ years of Online Learning (or e-learning) Instruction, other than Emergency Remote Teaching (ERT) at the start of the Pandemic
COMPENSATION
This position is benefits ineligible in accordance with local, state, and federal regulations.
The compensation listed in this posting reflects what SEO believes it will pay for this position at the time of this posting. Consistent with applicable law, compensation will be determined based on the skills, qualifications, and experience of the applicant along with the requirements of the position, and SEO reserves the right to modify this pay range at any time.
