Job Description

General Summary
The Gaffer is responsible for the set up and control of Studio lighting equipment. This position moves and maintains the lighting and equipment from one scene to another in order to create the visual effect desired by the Director of Photography.

Job Functions

  • Ensure the proper lighting equipment is operational and set-up for filming each day.
  • Place lights and deliver electricity to the scene as assigned (i.e., hang lights in proper location, run power/necessary data to all lights, perform light rigging, install necessary color/image patterns into lights, etc.).
  • Take responsibility for flying rigs, bounces and lights being safely installed in accordance with established industry standards.
  • Responsible for multiple stages and scenes each day.
  • Organize rentals and returns of special lighting gear needed for specific scenes and lighting equipment, as necessary.
  • Manage power source(s) for various sets and balancing power loads while maintaining electrical safety.
  • Responsible for on-stage inspection of electrical, grip and lighting equipment to ensure safe and proper working order.
  • Assist with maintenance and testing of equipment.
  • Create and maintain an inventory of lighting equipment.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience as a Gaffer on feature film (stop motion animation, preferred).
  • Strong knowledge of lighting equipment, techniques and associated visual effects.
  • Knowledge of electrical power distribution.
  • Ability to combine creativity with technical skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of equipment safety.
  • Basic knowledge of artistic principles of lighting camera/cinematography for feature film production.
