The Phlebotomist role is responsible for the proper collection and handling of specimens as appropriate for the patient. The Phlebotomist is able to handle all areas of processes and procedures while maintaining a friendly and customer service approach with patients. Accurately and efficiently reports critical results and monitors incoming results from reference labs and logs/communicates results to providers via the EMR.

 

Position Summary:

 

  • Complete specimen collection using appropriate collection techniques and devices as appropriate for age of patient. Demonstrates safe handling and proper collection techniques to maintain integrity and quality of specimens. Ensure optimal quality and quantity of samples. Use correct procedure for labeling, accessioning, and delivering specimens to the proper department. Complete all work in accordance with outlined hospital and laboratory guidelines, and federal, state, and local requirements.
  • Educate patients and document appropriately.
  • Communicate information to appropriate areas, departments and individuals. Alert appropriate staff concerning STAT orders.
  • Restock phlebotomy trays and procurement areas after use and at end of shift.
  • Assist medical staff with requested laboratory records and test results, prints, faxes, and distributes patient reports per laboratory policy.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Independence Physician Management (IPM), a subsidiary of UHS, was formed in 2012 as the physician services unit of UHS. IPM develops and manages multi-specialty physician networks and urgent care clinics which align with UHS acute care facilities.
