EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
High School Diploma or Equivalent
Minimum 21 years of age.
Previous experience in Security Operations, Military, or Law Enforcement preferred.
Candidate must have satisfactory outcome of fingerprinting and extensive background check.
High School Diplomas and college/university degrees must be obtained from an accredited program or university approved by the United States Department of Education and the Texas Education Agency.
PRIMARY PURPOSE SUMMARY:
The role of the Safety Specialist is to provide for the safety and security of all students, faculty, and staff, as well as the security of all district/campus property and equipment. Provides excellent customer service to a campus and the district by supporting administrators, campus staff, and law enforcement in a timely, thorough, and professional manner. Supports the Safety and Security Department with ensuring district compliance with federal, state, local, and district safety requirements. Supports school safety efforts with security inspections/audits, investigating school safety issues, and providing various types of safety or emergency response training. Works with campus administration, various District departments and public safety entities concerning emergency response protocols. In case of an active threat event or other life-threatening situation, will utilize firearm possession authority for protection of students and staff.
ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Patrol and monitor campus buildings and grounds, alerting to and appropriately responding to unauthorized persons, hazardous situations, and suspicious circumstances.
2. Provide prevention and detection of security violations, safety hazards, enforcement of traffic and parking regulations, and observe and report criminal activity.
3. Conduct regular inspections of perimeter fence conditions, exterior door security, access control points, video surveillance systems, and parking lot areas to ensure campus is properly secured.
4. Conducts safety and security audits of campus facilities and assists with the coordination and management of District safety and security compliance requirements.
5. Create and maintain daily activity logs, incident reports, and other documentation as needed by the Safety and Security Department, such as logs related to emergency exercise/drills or exterior door sweeps. Identifies and records observed safety violations or security related incidents and prepares written reports.
6. Initiate or respond to and assist campus administration in the investigation and resolution of security related incidents and code of conduct infractions. Observe or otherwise obtain information from all relevant sources as part of incident investigation. Supports campus behavioral threat assessment teams.
7. Assist campus administration with monitoring student behavior and school rules related to student conduct, vehicle operation, and parking.
8. Works with campus administration and first responders concerning emergency management and incident response procedures, emergency drills/evacuation, standard response protocols, as well as provides safety training/briefings to campus staff.
9. Adheres to professional ethical standards in relationship to students, teachers, parents, administrators, and other support staff.
10. Assists campus staff in the supervision of students during arrival and dismissal from school.
11. Assists in fostering positive school or organization morale, while promoting a positive and caring school climate. Serves as a positive role model that supports the mission of the District and the campus.
12. Participates in staff development, faculty meetings, special events, and other District specified training programs.
13. Maintains frequent and effective communication with chain of command and campus administration regarding safety and security issues or concerns.
14. Maintains confidentiality of all information.
15. Reports to work on time every day.
16. Performs additional duties and responsibilities as may be assigned.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
• Successful completion of a pre-employment background investigation and pre-employment physical examination to include vision, hearing, alcohol and drug testing, and a psychological examination.
• Candidate must possess a valid License to Carry firearm certification from the State of Texas or meet the qualifications of obtaining an LTC via the Texas DPS Special Conditions for Law Enforcement, and Texas Department of Public Safety School Safety Guardian program within six months after employment.
• Within prescribed time frame, successful completion of various other in-service training related to crisis intervention, incident command, first aid, mental health, behavioral threat assessment, and firearms retention and regular re-qualifications.
• Proficient in the use of computers and computer-related equipment with working knowledge or willingness to learn the use of general and specialized software applications (i.e., databases, spreadsheets, word processing, maintenance, project management, etc.).
• Effective written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to maintain emotional control under stressful situations and use sound judgement and critical thinking when making decisions.
• Ability to operate and maintain facility security equipment.
• Ability to deal sensitively and fairly with people from diverse backgrounds, and effectively interact with students, staff, parents, and community.
• Comply with all school policies and procedures with respect to uniform, appearance, attendance, and scheduling.
• Valid Texas Drivers license with driving record that meets the requirements of the District.
• Possess own duty gear and equipment (partial reimbursement upon successful completion of required training and service time), to include but not limited to: 9mm (Glock or Smith & Wesson) Pistol, (2) magazines, and any other District approved personally purchased duty gear or equipment.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to use hands or fingers to handle, feel, reach with hands and arms, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, use ladders and lift equipment, use catwalks to access building roofs/lofts/stage area/cooling or water towers, access and work in utility tunnels/basements/attics and other confined spaces. The employee must be able to lift or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. May be required to work weekends and when necessary, as requested. The employee may be required to drive a district vehicle in the performance of assigned tasks, operate radio communication systems, video surveillance systems, alarm systems, and other security equipment.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The employee is exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, hot/cold outside weather temperatures, moving mechanical parts, high or precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is occasionally loud.
